Change my 54 Renegade to 50?

Hi all,

I have a TC Renegade in .54 and was wondering if I should change it to .50. Most of my hunting is for Deer and Hogs since I have settled in Texas. Is the .50 more versatile?

The .54 is a great round ball shooter. I have been using a .50 for the past 16 years, a .45 before that, and now I have a .54. Stay with the .54, it's great.

The T/C Renegade, with its 1 in 48" twist, (.50 & .54) is primarily a roundball, and conical shooter. Therefore I see no more versatility in a .50.  I prefer the .54 caliber, as I shoot patched round balls. I like the idea of the extra energy that the .54 sends down range, when hunting. I have no trouble finding .54 caliber roundballs, or .54 T/C Maxi-Balls, for that matter. I make my own patches from pillow ticking, so that is not a problem either.  As you have a Renegade, the two barrels, (.50  .54) are interchangeable on it. Why not have one of each !

I agree with the past two posters. The .54 is a grand caliber for Black powder arms! No need to change to .50!
 My introduction to BP was a Renegade .54 15/16 barrel 25 years ago. And to this day, I wish I had never sold that gun.( Fond memories  .)
 I still shoot .54. They out preform the .50's hands down. The little .40's and .45's might be a bit more accurate for paper, but the .54 cut's a big hole and hit's hard.

Thanks for the info. I was looking at T/Cs web site yesterday and they don't appear to sell 54 cal ball anymore, so who makes them?

If I change I definitely was planning on keeping the 54 barrel

One of the worlds most prolific producers of firearms projectiles Hornady, makes a few .54 caliber projectiles available for the T/C Renegade. As well as a some others like SPEER  and LEE.  Uhm, check your local sporting goods store.
 If you are in a very isolated area please PM, and I will send buy USPS to you for cost any needed size roundball available to me too you.
 p.s. if you are just fishing, and don't really know if you want to buy a .54 renegade then DON'T,,just send the sellers address to me and I'll deal with that person on a one to one basis!

No need for that I don't think. I live I San Antonio so odds are I'll be able to find some. We have Bass Pro, Sportsman's warehouse, Academy and lots of gun stores. I just haven't ever used roundball, always shot maxis the few times I took the rifle out for a spin. Patched ball seemed more complicated what with the different sizes along with various patch thickness. Being a rookie, I thought it easier to learn on the conicals.

If you got a Sportsmans's warehouse near, then for starters, go get ya some .530 ball (they market 535 also) and some pre-lubed .015 patches (they'll look yellow), and a pound of 777 2F,(FFG). You'll need a "short starter" also. Then just follow directions on the packages. (75-80 grn's of t-7 should do just fine). When you get used to that you'll get one ragged hole at 50 yards. (say 40-50 shots!?) then you'll have more questions. We can tune that thing into 3-4"(6"?) shot's at 100 if your eyes are good enough
