track size vs weight
« on: June 17, 2007, 06:15:14 PM »
Hello everybody ,
I was out walking my buddies property today checking my deercam and ran across some pretty big Bear prints in a muddy section of the logging road in two seperate spots.I ran out and got some Plaster of Paris and made three casts ,2 of the front paws that were in one loocation and one of a rear foot. The front pad measures 5 inches across. The rear fot measures 11 inches from the back of the heel to the tip of the claws.Any idea how big this blackie is ? I've shot one a few years ago ( 180 lbs gutted ) and the front paw was something on the order of 3.75 inches. Some of the locals have been seeing a very big bear within 2 or 3 miles of my site but people think all bears look big.Last year i captured a 2 yr old smallish bear on film in this area but he didnt grow this big in one year.I think this is a big boar looking for love. How big do you guys think this bear will go ?

No idea what he would weigh.  But if it is a black bear you can figure that more than likely it is a 6 foot bear (nose to tip of tail).  Front pad size, add 1, convert directly from inches to feet.  It's not a guarantee, but close.

Probably 300 or better.  Anything over 4 1/2 inches is a shooter bear for most of us.  Rev

Dr. Ken Nordberg says that any hind foot length that measures in the nine-inch range is an absolute shooter/trophy bear.  He thinks that the hind foot measurement is a better estimate of trophy status/skull measurement than the width of the front pad is.  Nevertheless, you got both measurements and that is one big bear.
