  Believe me I agree the closer the better on DG.  ;)  My questions is you say you didn't get enough penertration? Was it you didn't through and through shots or they stop on a shoulder bone or what? Cause I find it very hard to believe an 8x57mm wouldn't give complete or off side hide penertraion at 100 yard on down? Or are you saying you didn't get to the vitals?  ??? Then again I wouldn't be counting on one bullet dropping a big bear in it's tracks either! I'd be shooting as long as hes still moving!

DM, I fully understand your experience and decisions on bullet choice.
I just have one more question to ask.
Humour me if I seem to be repeating myself.
Clearly deer will fall from a hit by a 180gr pill and even a 150gr for smaller deer species or antelope.
If the manufacturers are making those 200gr+ heavy bullets for 8x57, and since it's the most popular round in 8mm you'd have to think so, what are they useful for?

Enjoyed your post about the penetrating qualities of the 30-06 200NP's and how  it out penetrated the 8x57 and other larger rounds as well. 

Finn Agaard, a former professional hunter from Kenya who migrated to the US when hunting was outlawed in Kenya, did a lot of testing and his findings about the 30-06 200 gr. NP was the same as yours. His published results shows that it was as good a penetrator as the .375, 458, etc.  He never wrote about the 8x57 , but your experience would seem to settle that issue.  Agaard commented several times on what a really great load the 30-06 /200NP was.

I enjoy the 8mm threads since I have hunted with the 8 and my nephew currently uses one and has taken two whitetail this year with his 8mm and 185 grain Core-lokts. Both deer DRT with excellent shot placement.

I enjoy these threads also. They just reinforce what some of us know already--the 8x57 is a great round.

My 14 y.o. daughter will be moving up to an 8mm next year. I shoot S&B's, her rifle shoots the HotShot (Prvi) the best, but I may end up scaling back to the American loads for her to lighten it up a bit.

I would not compare a 200 gn 308 with a 200 gn 323 slug; even at the same velocity (let's say 2500'/sec) the 308 slug will out penetrate, it is simple physics.  If I  compare the ballistic profile of a 308 slug with a 323 (8mm) slug it would be a 180 gn 308 and a 200 gn 323; when you jump up to 200 gns in the 308 you need to get up to about 220 in the 323 for fair comparisons.  If you take a look at the 150 gn 308 you could compare its profile to the 180 gn 323.  Let's make equitable comparisons. 

One other thing I have noticed in reloading for both cartridges is that you can load the 8mm slug out veeery long in those mil-spec/mil-surp Mausers, sometimes even longer than the col for a 180 gn 06, and this helps with the heavier slugs.  Mil-surp 8mms have much longer throats than many of the 06 sporters out there.  I would love to have a new Rem something in 8mm but I don't think the throats would be long enough for my loads.  More 2 cents.

  True enough, EXCEPT the 8x57 case doesn't have enough capacity to push those 220 fast enough to make up for the extra weight it's pushing.  Keep in mind, we aren't talking solids here, we are talking "expanding" bullets that will "also" penetrate deeply, and nothing i've ever seen does both of those all in one bullet, better than NP's.

  Same thing can be said of 220's in the 30-06, needs more case capacity to push them fast enough to make up the difference.

  I don't make this stuff up, go out an shoot a few moose with "both" and see for yourself, as a deer isn't much of a test for cartridges/calibers/bullets of this size...
