204 Accuracy?

Hello everyone.

I've been thinking of getting a 204 Ruger barrel for my NEF Ultra.  I'd like to hear from all you guys who have the 204 barrel and what kind of accuracy you get out of it. What's your best load?
The 204 sounds like a great round for groundhogs.

I feel aweful to put you on to this rifle. I have my doubts about that rifle.
Have it made into a 6x47 or 6x220 Swift. Or just simply sell it. Don't broadcast how bad it shoots. :'(

I'm shooting Mitchell's 204 Ruger load, 40gr Vmax and BL-C2, shoots sub moa for me, not as good as his did so so far, but I'm still workin on it!! ;D Mine doesn't shoot any factory ammo this well, but it does much better than 2MOA, 1¼" to 1½" is the best it did with factory, but I got lots of brass from trying it!!

houser52 :  I have had my Ruger .204 about 5 months it is just the regular HB and wood stock. I have  put a little over 100 rounds thru it and they have all been factory 32 grain and I still am gettig 1/2" TO 3/4" groups.Thats not saying that it would be the best for you as there are some who get the best accuracy with the 40 grain. I know that QUICKDTOO has a .204 and it is a real good shooter to. You mentioned that you would be using it on groundhogs and if you read back a few pages read what DALESCARPENTARY had to say about his .204 he done good with his. I think you would like one to as there is no recoil.

I am real happy with the way my 204 has been shooting. I have killed many ground hogs this season that were way out there. I had an issue this past week when I missed a couple at 125 yards or so and could not figure out how I could have missed at such a close distance. This past weekend I took it to the range and found my problem. It was 2 inches left and an 1 inch high a 100 yards. This gun rides in the back of my truck in a hard case with my tools. I am thinking it just got knocked out of wack from that. Or I at least hope that is what happened. Today I missed another at about 200 yards. So off to the range again. I need to find out if I have a scope problem. It maybe having a problem holding zero. It is a Bushnell Banner 6x24x40. Next time I go to the range and if it is out then I know I have a scope problem. I have not looked into the warranty I have on it yet but if it is a good one it will be sent back. You will love the 204 it really is a great round. I just think I have other issues with it right now.

I have two of those scopes. The only problem I have had with mine was when I fell off the top of a gravel pit with one of them(too long of a story for here). The rifle was dropped and zero went about 2 feet to the right, the side I dropped it on. Both of them seem to be holding zero other than that. I am going to do a little experimenting with them to see how well they hold zero after turning the power up and down and adjusting the AO. I am doing this because my point of impact is changing to the right about 1/2" from one bench session to the next on one of them. This is with field work and just setting around in between. This one sets by the back door and do not know if the door opening and shutting is rattling the scope enough to shift the impact. Twice now it has shifted 1/2". I do run the power up and down. I turn it up to 24X for bench work and then turn it back down to 8X - 12X for field work. Of course the AO is being cranked on all of the time. from 100 yds at the bench to 50 yds, back to 200 yds for the field stuff. If the weather holds, I am going to this tomorrow with one of them. The other one is not at home right now.

Let me know what you find out. I to switch between powers often and change the ao often also. Thanks Dale.

My .204 was boring. The first load I tried gave me a group that was more or less a single hole. I like playing with loads to get the best group. I guess I should be happy, but I wish I had to work a little harder. I used Varget which is not a speed champ in this caliber, but it worked.

Hey good for you!!!!!! We should all have those problems. Next time "if ever" I hit the Loto I am going to wish I had not hit it so soon because I was having to much fun playing.

The 204 I had, in which was short lived in my cabinet, was a most excellent shooter. I was able to get 1/4" groups when I did my part, as I do with my 223 Ultra. Only reason I got rid of it was I have too much reloading supplies for my 223 to warrant pursuing a 204.
The 204 is a very nice little cartridge and is very explosive. If you are interested in this caliber, I say go ahead and give her a try and pick up a box of V-Max's. Once you got her dialed in you will be happy with the destructiveness of this little cartridge.
