338 handi?
« on: June 18, 2007, 10:58:18 AM »
Just thinking is it pos. to do say from a 308 barrel would make a great all around rifle. I was reading a article in Guns & Ammo mag on the 338 federal.

I agree the 338 federal would be very handi.
It would mean a re-bore though.
Probably cost more than a Handi.
Also, You may want to start with a smaller chamber barrel so the smith has room to work.

338 Federal has a little different shoulder angle than the 308, but you certainly could make a 338-08(33-308) out of it. For the money, 338-06 A-Square gets my vote, better performance for $$ spent, the rebore is gonna cost the same. The only benefit the 338 Federal has for a handloader is it's a short action cartridge, a moot point in a Handi. ;)

You would get more out of the 338-06 i was looking at it in a over the counter ammo point.

True for right now..there are more loads available forthe A-Square..but..no factory loads for this cheap..http://www.midwayusa.com/eproductpage.exe/showproduct?saleitemid=754264

While not giving as much punch as the A-Square..it still has a lot going for it..

There's a fair amount of "factory" 338-06 A-Square ammo, but I wouldn't exactly call it over-the-counter!! Unlike the 338 Federal which might be almost as hard to get for a while, Federal does have 4 loads for it.

While I believe the 338-06 to get the nod in over all performance, I see Marlin giving the green light to chamber the Handi in the 338 Federal sooner than I can them doing it in 338-06 :-\
I believe 338 Federal would be a great mid range hunting cartridge, and especially in a Handi.
However if it came to getting it done professionally then, I would suggest the 338-06. At first I knew very little about the cartridge, but the more I learned the more I have seen it as an excellent cartridge. Especially in a 26" barrel like Mac and Tim have had done.

Would be it the 338 Fed. be a good idea? Depends on your hunting demands. But either way, it would be a cool one  8)
I don't know anyone that has a Handi in it....yet  ;D

WOW! Mac, that is a good price for such a new caliber.  Federal is really taking the lead on this one.  I hope this round lasts.

I am quite sure it will once folks start using it..It has all the potential of a great short to medium range deer/elk rifle...and folks love these medium bores...Add in some match grade re-sized 308 brass..and some good bullets...it is certainly re-loader friendly..Now...if Federal will release those fusion bullets and allow folks to buy them as well...
