Florida Hog hunt

Hello all,
  I want to do some hog hunting in Florida,Near Orlando if possible. Anyone been down there for that. recomend an outfitter? Drop me a e-mail  scott@trussus.com

I don't know of a place in Florida, but I do have a question:  You mention that you want to use 165 grain NBTs (which I assume are Nosler Ballistic Tips.)  Why do you want to use these bullets on hogs?  I understand that NBTs are generally more accurate than NPs, but in my personal opinion and practice, I have found the Nosler Partitions to be much, much more effective on hogs.

NBTs are fine for thin skinned game like whitetails, but I have seen them completely blow up on hogs.  I would stick with weights of at least 165 grains, and preferably go to 180 grains.  Either way, I would use stout bullets like the Nosler Partition, Swift A-Frames, Trophy Bonded, Barnes-X, etc.  Granted these bullets are expensive, and very heavy duty, but hogs are not slouch.  You can use your NBTs on hogs, but remember me when they run off after you shoot them, and you never see them again. :grin:

You may want to click on the link to my webpage below in my signature also... for more boar hunting information. Tab down and take a look at the Sierra 180 grain round nose that I took a boar with, loaded to 2400 fps in my .30-06... I have a link on my site map which will give you several outfitters, but most are in the Tennessee area.

Also, I agree with the previous posts about the boat tail bullet... I would strongly suggest leaving that on the bench and go with something in a round nose. Nosler makes a partition round nose (can't remember exactly, but I think its' 170 grains) At .30-30 velocities, it would be a MUCH BETTER CHOICE... Take time to check out the thread on this forum (wild boar) from hawaiihunter... and be sure to read ALL THE REPLIES including page two... food for thought... Dave

    That was a fast response. The big thing guys are getting at about the boat tail bullet is that, being of BT design, it is designed for high velocity, long range shooting. That's why its' of BT design... higher B/C for flatter trajectory... By design, the boat tails generally have a somewhat more frangible (thinner, more fragile) gilding jacket than do the heavier partitions, and especially the round nose bullets which are designed to perform correctly at a shorter range and slower velocities... Actually, the flat nose bullets intended for .30-30 velocities would be a better choice, since again, they are designed for the velocities, and associated short range capabilities of that particular round... Sierra makes an outstanding line of Pro-Hunter bullets for the .30-30 which are a great choice... THE LAST THING YOU WANT is for that boat tail bullet to blow up (fragment) on a boar... not a good thing....

Scottduck back in '97 we took a trip to Carter's Pasture http://www.carterspasture.com. The hunt for me was for fallow deer and I took a really nice one. Mike Carter had so many hogs on that 1100 acres of FL swamp he calls a hunting preserve that he was allowing folks hunting other game to take eating size pigs free. Since Mrs. GB was with me I paid him an extra $25 to let her hunt an eating size piggie also. We both took nice eating size (about 90 pounds) pigs in addition to my fallow deer. They had hogs all over the place and we saw them everywhere we went on the ranch. Not real near Orlando as it is in the middle norther part of the state just south of GA and west of Jacksonville.

Tho I've never hunted there the Lightsey Cattle Company http://www.lightseycattleco.com has a good reputation and it is in Lake Wales which if memory serves me correctly isn't so far from Orlando. Back in '58 I lived in Haines City which is about 40 miles from Orlando. If there were hogs around there I sure wasn't aware of it. Now FL is covered with them and they actually have more hogs than deer according to most estimates.

Thank you all.   I have booked a Hog hunt with Okeechobee Outfitters. I did get two referals. I also booked a hunt on The Brady Ranch. I will keep you posted on the results..........  SD
