44 special in 1894
« on: June 18, 2007, 04:50:21 PM »
stopped a maruading cottontail in the garden with 240 lee tl in a cowboy+ load.. this load shoots great to 50 yds. easily golf ball or minute of squirrel head performance.  mr bunny took two thru shoulders, first at 20 yds, ran 50 more and was stopped by second shot. I know...head shots will be effective.  wanted to see how this would do.  really not any better than a 22lr.  what can I do to smack them harder?  love this rifle and it has become my anytime fun gun.

I bought one of these on the spur of the moment at the gun shop and really like it. First time I shot it, I was into sixty rds. before I realized how many rounds I'd shot.(and how hot the barrel was getting) Just fun! However, the 44 special stuff didn't seem to shoot very well in my rifle. I tried a couple of different loads that I had in the cabinet and it didn't work nearly as well as the full house mag loads I worked up for it. It seemed the harder I smacked the 240 grain bullets, the better it shot. When I get time I'm going to work on a 44 Mag reduced load to see if I can get good accuracy out of something a little more pleasant to shoot.
;D

I have a Marlin 1894 .44 Mag in stainless steel and love it.  It is accurate and fun to shoot ;D

 :o :o :o :o :o!!!

You put a 44 caliber slug through a cottontail rabbits shoulders, and he didn't just flop over!??

I've killed tons of them with "very" low powered 38 specials, and I've never had anything but instant flopping with any kind of body shot. If you found a rabbit that took two chest shot's from a 44 special before expiring you might want to think about mounting it! ;D If he was that tough, he deserves the respect. ;D ;D ;D

I agree! That's some rabbit! My 1894 shoots 44 Specials just fine. They have a different POI though, and I have the sights set for the 44 Mags that I hunt with.

Was the rabbit wearing a red cape?  Prehistoric Indians killed them by throwing sticks at them, :D
