10-22 Ammo??
« on: June 18, 2007, 05:09:30 PM »
I know this has been beat to death, and also know different rifles like different stuff, but, what are you guys using in your 10-22s. Just got on have cleaned it good ready to shoot.  Have some Rem bulk ammo, and some CCI mini max. Save me some money from your experience, where should I start???? Thanks.
It's better to have it and not need it, than need it and not have it.

I was recently at the range with a buddy who has a 10-22.  He was firing "minute of squirrel" at 100 yards using Federal American Eagle and the Federal blue box.  I believe they are called "Champions", but I'm not sure.  He could have shot out the center of the target if he wanted to.

Mine likes the remington thunderbolts. My friend got mad at me 'cause I was shooting the clothespins off his target. I shoot 10 round dime sized holes at fifty yards if I do my part, haven't tried any match ammo yet.

I have noticed that expensive, well made rifles shoot ammo with less variation that cheaper ones.  My 77-22 is a bit more accurate than my 10-22, but if I were to take the best groups from the 10-22 and the worst ones from the 77-22, you would think the 10-22 was a better rifle. The variation for the 77-22 is about 5/8 inch to 1 3/4 inches, while for the 10-22 it is 1 1/4 inches to 4 inches.

In most of my older 10/22's, CCI's shot the best on average. Even in the book by  Wm. E Wortman   " The Ruger 10/22 " it stated that the CCI ammo was the most accurate in most guns tested. Do I use all CCI's?  Most of the time NO. I just find the best shooting bulk ammo for that gun.

Mine(10/22T) likes Federal American Eagle HP's and Federal Game Shok 38gr HP's, But in all reality it eats just about anything and I've never had a gopher complain ;)

I shoot Remington Thunderbolts in mine (it's completely stock regular model); it tends to misfeed every now and then with anything else.

I've been shooting the cci RN mini-mags out of my 10/22. haven't had any jams and the accuracy is very good.

Mine , my Brother in-law and a friend use the HP cci mini-mags for gopher shooting for good ammo the mini-mags seem to be a safe bet. After that are bets are off, for cheap plinking ammo they seem to like different things the best cheap stuff in mine is American eagle 38 gr the the federal bulk works just fine though a little less accurate.

Mixed results with Remington

Winchester has all been crap.

I found  an older, walnut stock (alum. butt plate) 10/22 and gave it to my daughter for her birthday.  The first time we shot it, we got a jam at least once in every ten shots.  We were using various ammo that probably had been in my truck too long. I had her load up with Fed. automatch and it didn't jam again.
