45 Colt Carbine
« on: June 19, 2007, 07:33:50 AM »
Can the loads for the 45 Colt Carbine could be the same pressures as Ruger, Freedom Arms, and TC published loads?

I am thinking they can be, as the Handi should be in the same class of firearm strength. Just wanted to make sure though.

Thanks, Mike

The Handi is available in 500 S&W, and the BC frame has the same SB2 frame as the Handi, it's just case colored. ;)

Grandpa Mike, You asked a question I've been looking for, so I appreciated your question.
First post here, been waiting for e-mail confirmation, and decided to try and post anyway, to say thanks for the question!

I'm assuming pressure for book loads in .500 S&W is suitable for the .45. Just picked one up three weeks ago, and it sure opened my eyes. Ragged holes at 50 with the slow cowboy stuff. That is one fun rifle to mess with.

Can anyone point me to some data with the heavier loads that won't shake, rattle, and roll my little rifle loose.

Would appreciate it much. Guessing on my part, green on the Handi tuning and loading, though have messed with them quite a bit, but thinking mid 20,000 psi about right for what I've have found on sites here there and yonder.

You guys have a lot of good info here for the NEF's and H&R's, thanks a bunch!

Just about every manufacturer of bullets offers a loading manual with "heavy" loads for the 45 Colt. It is generally accepted that the Handi can also handle any one these loads.

My favorites are H110/296 and the various 300gr soft points. The MAG XTP from Hornady shoots well but I have yet to harvest game with it.

As will all loads, please start at the recommended starting loads and work up. Stop when that ammo begins to show signs of pressure.

CW - Thanks for reply, have been assembling components, got the books, but listed components getting hard to find in one spot. Gathering up in different places, and probably going to mail-order others if in stock. Wanting to load some hunting loads for this little gun. Think it will make a dandy woods packer.

Welcome aboard Deadlast! Here's my range report on the 45 Colt Carbine, to date, I don't recollect anyone shooting heavier loads in theirs yet, there actually haven't been too many reports so far.

Thanks quickdtoo, printed out your .45 Colt results.  Haven't used the Gold Dot much, but lots of hunting experience with the XTP bullets, all of it good. What little with the Gold Dot has worked well for me also. Most of my loading with the H&R, NEF's has been .223, .44, & 45-70. Getting a pretty good pile of Magtech cowboy load empty brass in .45 Colt, that need refilling also. Probably going to start with the 250 gr. XTP, and mail order some Beartooth LBT's to start with.

Think that steel plate on the buttstock might need some "alteration" though at 1900+. Thanks for the info.

I don't think you can get enough recoil out of a 45 Colt to worry about the steel butt plate, even with my warm loads, recoil was pretty much non-existent compared to the 444 I was shooting the same day, I was shooting in a t-shirt and had no problems. Recoil is about 17lbs with the 250gr bullet, 300gr would be about 19lbs, or about the same as a 30-06.

If you do feel the need for a recoil pad, the Galco or Kickkiller leather slip-ons are nice. There's a link in the FAQs for recoil pad options for H&Rs. ;)
