Best anti itch meds for a dog
« on: June 19, 2007, 04:24:58 PM »
Any suggestions for a good anti itch medicine for a dog?   Tried the oatmeal shampoo , and now the vet said to try geniesis (SP?) spray.  Can't be fleas. dog had a bath and using Advantix . No flea found.  Vet thinks it is a "seasonal" allergy.  Could be allergic to of all things , THE LAWN!!!

I did try some Dyfenhydramine pills from the pharmacy and some 1 % cortizone cream.   The store stuff seemed to work better than the expensive stuff from the Vet.

Can a dog really be allergic to a lawn??

It may not be the lawn the dog is allergic to, but the products you use on the lawn.   Many of the fertilizers and pesticides on the market today will cause problem for animals.  Take an inventory of the lawn products you use and look at the MSDS warning on the bags.  If you no longer have the bags, go to the company's web site and see if you can find a MSDS for their product.

One of the products that I have found to be very effective on both dogs and cats is "SeboRex" shampoo, it is normally only available from a vet supply house, but some local vets may carry it.  The cost should be about $10-12 for a 12 fl oz bottle.

I also have a dog who is allergic to the lawn.  He starts out in about July with pink, sore feet.  That will spread as he licks them.  Eventually, the hair on his feet fall out.  His coat thins.  His eyes are red.  His mouth raw.  He is miserable.

We tried immunosuppresent (sp?) treatment.  No luck there.  Changing diets, no luck.  About the only thing that helps is Wal-Hist.  Eventually, we break down and treat him with steroids and anti-biotics.  I feel bad for him.

I also avoid using any lawn care products in the back yard.  I spot-treat weeds, and use only food-grade fertilizer.  I am wondering if it is something other than grass that comes out in the later summer, and maybe some weed and feed type product would knock it out.

I am at a loss.

This is inexpensive and risk free way to try get rid of the problem. I had an old dog that developed the similar problem with itching. I started to rinse him with solution of white vinegar and warm water after washing him with normal shampoo. I also added 1 table spoon of vinegar to his water. After few rinses his itch went away. I continued giving him vinegar to the water since I learned that it will reduce damage to the grass from dog urine. I would start with mild mixture and see how it will react to it. Good luck.

Used motor oil with yellow sulfur mixed in......the dog will need to stay outside and off the porch........
