700rem barrel set back
« on: June 19, 2007, 05:37:47 PM »
I'm thinking of having the barrel set back and re-chambered for my 700VS in 22/250. Cost would be $150 vrs 400 for a new barrel. Any one got any negatives to say about this? Would it be worth the money vrs a new barrel?    KN

Don't know why you want to set the barrel back unless the throat is shot out. If it still shoots good shoot it. But if it's fallen off then setting it back might or might not help it. If gaining new throat  is what you're after then set it back. Sometimes it will give old barrels new life. If that's all you can afford do it.

If the accuracy has fallen off I would advise a re-crown before setting the barrel back. Many times this will restore some of the lost accuracy. Remington factory barrels sometimes generate flakes or spalling at the muzzle. This can create accuracy problems in an otherwise good barrel. It is a fairly cheap process and has a significant success rate. If the throat is truly moved forward a set back and re-chamber would fix the situation. A lot depends of why you are considering such a drastic measure.

This is a prairie dog gun, with a little over 4000 rounds through it. I don't have a bore scope but see no reason that the rifling would be bad. It also gets re-crowned periodically. Accuracy has just fallen off to where it no longer shoots well enough for pd's. I will of course have it checked out before any thing is done. I believe the throat s gone. Just wondering if a set back would be worth the money or not.   KN

That's a difficult call to make. If one were doing the work himself it may add a few years but since you would be hiring the work it would seem to me the price of a new barrel is small.. Still while the main wear on a barrel is the throat a 22-250 is not kind to a bore, especially so if used in a dog town. I believe I would opt for a new barrel..
