Savage 338-06 AI
« on: June 19, 2007, 08:35:04 PM »
I have decided to try my hand at building a rifle and it looks like the Stevens 200 might be the most economical action to build on.  I have read that Savage has used several thread sizes for their barrels.  Would an Adams & Bennett barrel fit the Stevens 200 in 30-06 or other long action based on the'06?  Also, the 338-06 A&B barrel is not currently available but the 338 Federal is.  Would it be possible to use this barrel and ream it out to the 338-06 AI specs?  I would have to ream whichever barrel I start with anyway.

Well, I found the answer to my dilemma. For only $20 more than the A & B barrel, I can get an E.R Shaw barrel chambered in 338-06.  Also, after further research into the Ackley cartridges, I don't think I'll be going that route anyway.

The Ackley version has several small advantages over the straight .338-06, but none worth spending much money on unless your going to used it everyday,  ::) , or you just want it.  ;)

I found the base rifle and am pretty pleased with it.  It was a great deal and I can enjoy shooting it as is until I amass the parts for conversion.  You can see the rifle here http://savageshooters.baker-media.com/SavageForum/index.php/topic,6877.0.html

Savage only has two threads, the small shank, and the large shank, which was the magnums.

I was thinking the large shank was used only on some of the ultra mags.  I put a .35 Whelen Shaw barrel on a 30-06 savage action, & it worked out great.  It's shoots in the 1-1.5" range at 100 yard range without any effort to get it to shoot better.   I believe when Shaw says Magnum contour, you will have to enlarge the barrel channel of any stock made for the 30-06 class guns.  No big deal.

Does anyone remember the scene from "Quigley Down Under" showing the aborigines lined up on the skyline as far as you could see?   That needs to be US!

A lot of people say ER Shaw makes the A&B barrels for Battenfield.
