Idas for a Hunting Backpack
« on: May 28, 2003, 08:33:40 AM »
I have been looking for a good camo backpack for both 1 – 2 day hunting trips and or hiking in the Sierras with wife and child.  I would like to have a medium - large pack with multiple pockets for organization.  A bladder to hold water would be nice but not necessary.  Currently I am using a simple (but good) hiking pack that does the job, but I need a larger one.  Any help, ideas or suggestions will be greatly appreciated.

Best,

Mark

I use a Bull-PACs (Made in Montana? or Oregon?) frame and strap the new Mad Dog camo pack to it. The pack is large enough for a 3-day camp if you pack smart-teh frame allow the pack to be a little heavier. It has awesome, wide, thich shoulder and waist belt, and many tie-downs. I use this method on my back-pack Elk hunts. It allows me to strip the pack and tie teh meat to the frame and not get the pack bloody. The frams is teh best I've tried, by far. It is advertised in Bugle magazine, and it was in North American Hunter at one tiem. Do an I-net search--it'll come up. Good lick. I endorse it completely as the best there is. The Mad Dog pack has lots of room, removable orange banners, lots of pockets, and is waterproof. It is one fine pack. I got it from The NA Hunting Club.
The first shot is the best shot, it may be your only shot!  Do it with a single-shot.

Make sure you keep that bladder disinfected.  I think most people use a mild bleach solution to keep the primordial ooze at bay.

it's tough to find a perfect pack, you'll likely end up with several since they are almost hunt specific when it comes down to it.

If you aren't hauling real heavy loads or covering lots and lots of miles then a ALICE pack may work for you depending on your height and build. there is probably 1 guy in 1,000 that an ALICE fits right. forget women, they suffer with any ALICE set up.

mountiansmiths packs , now Kifaru ( already sugested), is an excellent way to go. Completely custom built to you and a Spike pack will be less than $300. they also come with a 30 day money back unconditional guarantee!

how can you beat that?

I personally don't have one, but have had several guests show up with them and they were rugged and well built.
