Holster help ??
« on: June 22, 2007, 04:44:11 AM »
I need a new strong side holster for a New Ruger blackhawk 4 5/8's barrel 357mag I just bought. I was looking for something basic with lined leather and was wondering if anyone knew something that was nice and worked well with this model pistol? I normally carry my pistol while out  working around the ranch and hunting. Thanks for any help!

Cabela's has some really nice looking and reasonably priced holsters. They are what I seem to go to each time I need one for a single action.

Oklahoma Leather is i think, who GB is talking about, through Cabelas.
I contacted them about the Calvary Flap style holsters that are marked US for the blackpowder revolvers.  I had a repro. Colt Artillery model and they whipped me up one with the correct length. (5.5") instead of the 8" I would have gotten from Cabelas.  They were great to deal with.

For general everyday carry and hard use go here simplyrugged.com.  Get the three slot model for both strong side or cross draw use.  It's usefulness will become evident the more you use it.  In a hard use holster, you don't want lining, especially suede.  Suede catches a lot of dust and grit then begins to act as sandpaper on your gun's finish.  While smooth latigo is much better than suede, all linings stretch with use and begin to "grab" and hang up on sights and ejectors.  Far better is simply heavy smooth leather closely form fitted.

Will the Ruger blackhawk 357MAG fit the same holster as the Colt Single Action Army?  My local dealer said he had some nice leather holster's coming in next week inclueing some for Colt Single Action 4 3/4" holsters. He thought the blackhawk with same length barrel should fit those holsters also?

most of the time, you will need to test fit it.  The SAA is smaller, but it seems most holsters are cut big enough for the rugers.

The New Model Blackhawk is built on a .44/.45 frame and is a good bit larger overall than the Colt SAA.  Sounds as if your local dealer has never actually worn a holster to any serious degree.

Maybe look at those offered by Ruger that are made by Galco.  For something really nice - Mitch Rosen (yes I know I expound his stuff but I just think it's that good)

Thanks for all the help. For now I ordered a cheaper hunter leather holster to use, but also ordered one of these  Mernickle Custom Holsters yesterday but it's about a 6 week wait to get it. I couldn't help myself I have never had a real nice holster before in my life and this one looks great to me plus I liked the way it fit the gun and wasn't to bad in price at $119 compared to many other custom holsters I looked at. I will now try to forget I ordered it so when it comes I will be surpised.

If you go to the ruger website they sell some leather there, pretty reasonable, nothing fancy though.

I'm also a satisfied Simply Rugged customer. I have a "loaded Texas Pancake" for a Ruger Bisley .45 Colt. Excellent product, great workmanship and well worth the money. Maybe not as fancy as some holsters, but that is what I was looking for. Just a great, solid product. Plus, Rob Leahy is a good guy to work with. According to his website, he can dress his products up. Of course, it depends on how much you want to spend!
I plan to order another holster from him for a new Ruger 50th Anniv. 357 before long.

I have one of the Mernickle holsters you ordered.  I like it but I would caution you that you will want a close fit of the belt loops to your belt.  Any holster that carries a gun that high needs to fit tightly to the belt.  Mine a just a little looser that I would care for and therefore the holster moves around on me.  Other than that caution, it is a well made, useful holster.  For most field work, I also prefer holsters by El Paso Sadderly or San Pedro.  Both well made but I believe the San Pedro will cost you a little less.  44 Man

Thanks for the tip. I have many, many belts I  can test out. I went with the High ride because I carry a pistol often while rideing in the truck/4wheeler around on the ranch getting in and out doing chores. Also El Paso Saddlery does have some real nice holsters I looked at their website. I could see my self getting one of their holsters down the road.

Don't want to sound like I am throwing stones at Big Ed, but he is having some production problems.  Last I heard at another CAS site it was just him and his wife working on orders.  Some pards were waiting a very long time for their orders.  He does put out a good product from what I have seen, but double check first.
Just another voice in the crowd!!!

I happen to like cross draws for working guns and this one is what I've used for about 20plus years.  It's a Bianchi model 111 Cyclone keeps the gun secure and out of the way when working in the field but yet the gun is easily accessed
