HELP ME CLEAN MY FACE! 657CH THAT IS.
« on: May 28, 2003, 01:52:19 PM »
I just bought a S&W 657 classic hunter. 41mag. It's the first stainless revolver that I've owned. On the face of the cylinder there is a ring around each hole. I've tried everything. #9 with a bronze brush, no good.  I have this great new gun that I can't seem to get clean. Help me out. thanks in advance. Also if any one has any old info on the 657ch I'd really like to know how many times they have run these and how many each run. How many will they make this time? Any history on  this gun. Any thing else you might know, I'd love to hear.

If you plan on shooting the gun I wouldn't be too concerned about the discoloured ring on the cylinder face. Every time you shoot it it will return. You'll just drive yourself crazy trying to keep it spotless.  KN

cleaning stainless cylinder face

I've sucessfully used Naval Jelly rust remover to clean off the firing discolouration from stainless cylinder faces.

Just dad on some with a cleaning patch or a Q-tip cotton swab, let it set for a minute, and wipe off.  Rinse with water to remove all residue.  It will look like new!

Be advised that Naval jelly removes rust and bluing too, so it should only be used on stainless steel guns.

I read on another forum, of a guy using a pencil eraser, although I have never tried this myself.
Praise the Lord, and pass the ammunition!

You guys are going to think I'm nuts but I use a stainless steel brush (the toothbrush type) and Hoppes No. 9

It takes off the residue and doesn't ruin the surface of the gun (M629).  I suppose if I really bore down I could do some damage but Hoppes is so good for cleaning powder residue it doesn't take much scrubbing.  I clean my guns thoroughly.  Its not necessary but I can think of worse ways to spend an evening.  This also works well in the forcing cone and where the barrel protrudes through the frame.  I use a bronze brush on blued guns.

Try using a lead away cloth on the cylinder face, but be careful on a blued gun, as it will remove the blueing as well. The cloth can be used to remove leading inside your cylinders as well as the forcing cone area. Otherwise I generally use "Flitz" metal polish and then a followup with their wax leaving my pistols shiney and fingerprint free.
