Match Colt E Nickle
« on: June 25, 2007, 07:48:56 AM »
I have a Colt Commander that belongs to a friend.  The previous ower did his own "engraving" with a dremel tool.  I sanded the nastiness out and I need to get it refinished for him.  Does anyone have a good source to refinish the slide to match the original colt finish?

Thanks,

Crabo

Browse your local yellow pages telephone directory for electroplating shops.  If you are near or in a major industrial area, you should be able to find a shop that does electroless nickel plating.  Specify that it is for a part of a gun, and not the whole gun itself.  Federal and state laws require an FFL for working on receivers or complete guns.  They willl tell you to strip all the parts off and bring in the bare slide.

An alternative of course, is to ship it to a gun refinisher but that entails shipping costs and waiting time.

crabo:  check out our sponsor list to see if there is anything that might help.  I think there may be a few sponsors who could either perform the work or recommend someone for you.

I would also check out the Shotgun News as they run advertisments for a number of places that refinish 1911s.  HTH.  Mikey.

And as a last resort you could contact COLT since they were the ones who plated it in the 1st place, and if they dont do that kind of work anymore they may be able to recomend a reputable place that would.   JIM

I also ran across this place that a good friend of mine gave me a couple years ago and had misplaced it, its Quality plating in Bellville Il. phone # is 1-618-233-4808 I have no personel exoerience with them, and cant say I have seen any of their work but if Jerry had their name in his black book of who to contact they were wirth having it.  I hope it will help.   JIM
