Re-barrel 700rem
« on: June 26, 2007, 02:04:50 PM »
My smith tells me the throat is shot out too far forward for a barrel set back so now I need to choose a barrel maker. Any suggestions/preferences? I am kind of leaning toward Shillen only because I am some what familiar with their reputation. Comments?   KN

Midway sells "short chambered" Shilen barrels in the CM (no blueing) and SS hand lapped varieties. They sell them in a few different calibers for the REM 700. I think they are all of the heavy type (varmint contour) Price runs around $190 for CM and $250 for the SS. They also have the Adams & Bennett barrels in a verity of calibers. Those are CM only for the 700 and they run around $130 ( I have had good luck with these for Savages). You will have to look to see if they have it in the caliber of your choice and they are in stock. There are other options too. There is at least 1 barrel maker that will re-barrel for a nominal fee (using their barrels of course).

Or you can go to Ebay and buy a new takeoff Remington barrel for about $25.00 and be in business.  Larry

There are many workable ideas, depends on what you want and are willing to spend.  Most any of the name brand barrels (Lilja, Hart, Shilen, Douglas, PacNor...the list goes one) are well above factory, course anyone can have a bad day.
If you want a used heavy 6mm barrel, I have a SS Hart for sale for $100.
