Looking for a DA wheel gun in 45 colt
« on: June 27, 2007, 06:14:47 AM »
Got the 45 colt bug. Have a lever(Winchester), single shot rifle (H&R), SA revolver (ruger black hawk)now want a DA any suggestions. Thinking maybe a model 25 smith if I can find one.

Only smith I have is a model 57 & it has a great trigger & breaks like glass & takes full house loads with no problem.

The other 45 colt's I have can take the +p loads for the ruger, I assume the model 25 is standard pressure only?

So what is out there for a guy to check, pick up & fondle for the 45 colt DA
That's my boy, GOD BLESS AMERICA!!

I've got a 25-5. It'll take some over-pressure loads. There is currently no recognized standard by SAAMI for over-pressure loads in the .45 Colt, so make sure that the next guy's "+P" is your "+P".

I'd say the 25-5 is between standard and T/C/Ruger levels. I have a Blackhawk as well as the Smith, and there isn't a big difference in cylinder wall thickness, however, Ruger decided to place the cylinder stop notches in a better location.

John Linebaugh figures the 25-5 is good for an absolute maximum of 32,000 psi, since the walls are 80% the thickness of the Model 29. I feel no need to go anywhere near that. There is much that I can do and still keep it at 20Kpsi and under.

If you're getting an older S&W 45 wheelgun, as opposed to a Mountain Gun, check those chamber throats. My gun has generous throats, so it tends to do better with bullets sized .454-.455".

Of course: The SAAMI maximum average for the .45 Colt is 14,000 psi. You go above the SAAMI maximum average pressure at your own risk!

The 25-5 would be a fine choice but don't over look the Taurus Tracker in long colt , i just love mine and being a 5 shot it is 1/2 the size of the S&W . You will not be able to shoot Ruger level loads in either gun and expect them to last , but for standard loads they will last a life time .

I have owned and shot both for many years and either woukd be a good side arm , just stay away from the 45LC / 410 combo guns

You've got a couple more options that were not mentioned. Actually you have 4 more choices.

Ruger Redhawk, Ruger Super Redhawk, Dan Wesson, and Colt Anaconda. I have a Redhawk and an Anaconda. All 4 of these will handle " maximum book loads", but for handload experimenting you do it at your own risk. All of these were designed with heavy hunting loads in mind, so shooting them "loose" is going to be hard to do.

FWIW, my Anaconda is hands-down the BEST double-action bigbore I have ever owned or fired.
