Am I the "first one on the block"
« on: June 28, 2007, 02:08:40 PM »
 To own a 460 S&W magnum carbine ;D

Anyone care to guess how much velocity I'll gain with a 20" barrel over what the handguns run.

Left to right 45LC, 460S&W 300grn MAG XTP, 250grn Shockwave ML bullet and 45ACP ball

It will be interesting to see what the velocity potential of this pound is compared to the 45-70.  All I have read, indicates it approaches "factory" 45-70 loads.  The factory 300gr loads are around 1800fps.  Handloaders, using modern rifles have exceeded 2300-2400fps withing the second level of loads listed in manuals.  Don't mean to sound like I'm knocking it, I'm not, just comparing.

Level 1.  BP and early 45-70 arms
level 2.  marlin rifles, NEF
Level 3.  ruger #1

I expect to get well into the level 2 range of equivalent 45-70. From reports I've read 454 gets up to that threshold in a 20" barrel. The cool thing about the 460 is I have a much wider bullet selection than with .458 rifles at much lower prices with much less powder to boot.

You gotta also account for my 20" carbine length barrel, Compare the above rifle to a Guide guns ballistics and the new 460 will look even better.

I have seen a HUGE amount of .458 bullets available, especially when you get into the cast bullets.  Now comparing jacketed only, you might be right.  There is a lot of after factory loaded rounds available for the 45-70, Buffalo Bore, and other like them.

Do keep us posted on your results.
