yugo sks question
« on: June 28, 2007, 03:14:54 PM »
Just got a yugo sks & am in the process of de-comoing it.
I took out the firing pin & was wondering if there is suppose to be a spring? none in mine

Also on the gas valve for the grenade launcher /gas tube connection is there suppose to be a gasket of some kind.

My first SKS all the other mill surp have been bolts

pics or links to pics sights to get these answers would be great

Thanks

Congrats on the yugo!  The firing pin has no spring, it is normal. I think they make a kit to give it a spring and cut down on the dangers of a dry fire. Just make sure you get all and I mean all cosmoline out of the ever nook and cranny.  You shoud be able to shake the assembly and the pins should shake back and forth. If you keep it clean the spring is not needed.   I've had  a SKS firing pin to stick open and go fully auto for 5-10 rounds (American Eagle ammo) when I didn't get all the foam cleaner out of my Yugo.  It seems to happen when you shoot the USA made stuff as the primers are softer than the comie stuff.  I thought it was pretty cool but dangerous non the less.

There is no gasket in the gas valve.  Due to that, there can be a issue with gases leaking.  There are a couple of good aftermarket fixes.  Check out the SKS forum over at www.surplusrifle.com. for info and links to fixing it.

Not every SKS has a gas leak problem.

Also, It is generally not recommended that oil be left on the gas tube parts.  The oil attracts residue which can cause function issues.

Thanks guys that what I was hoping.
Got everything cleaned up & this thing looks new no wear marks, gas valve has no wear etc. Letting the mineral spirits dry hit it one more time with some brake cleaner oil her up & put it back together. Got some blanks & dummy grenades with it should be fun on the 4th

I left the cosmoline in the gas piston assembly when I shot mine, got the storage grease out of the rest of the gun.  It was interesting how the extra grease would ooze out of the gas piston vent when shooting it.  My Yugo SKS has since been properly cleaned and greased.  Nice gun, out of the 3 SKS's that I have owned the Yugos are my favorite.
