Action too tight on Partner shotgun
« on: June 28, 2007, 05:03:14 PM »
The FAQ has more on loose lock up.

A friend has a Partner 20g shotgun that does not lock up consistently. I put a thin piece of paper at the top and could not remove it when the gun was slammed shut.

The wear on the barrel lug is limited to the first 1/32".

Would filing the lug on the barrel, to allow more of the receiver lug to grip the barrel lug?

Or should the barrel be filed a bit to allow more engagement?

thanks,

mike

Removing metal on the latch shelf is very critical, a tiny bid makes a very big difference, and it must be done evenly across the whole shelf.  First thing I would try is to take a stone and carefully stone off the machine marks on the rear of the barrel, this will make for a more even consistant lockup, most Handi's have fairly course machine work on the rear of the barre.  Just opening and closing the action will also wear it in some and make it latch more consistantly.  You should be glad it is a little too tight and not too loose.  If you can close the action with a piece of paper in the top of the breach then it is not very much too tight.  Larry

The barrel fitting info addresses all issues of a proper fit, in the order they should be checked. First thing to do is clean it good, make sure there's no build up of crud on the barrel or the frame, that issue alone can keep the barrel from locking up good.

Thank you all. We cleaned up the barrel end with a file and a stone, and took a stone to smooth the lug.

It is still a bit tight but now it is usable. It is fairly new so it will get better with age.

again thanks,

mike
