I'm joining the "stick and string" crowd
« on: June 29, 2007, 10:46:08 AM »
After about 20 years absence from bow hunting I've decided to get back into it. I was at BassPro recently and talked to the guy in the bowshop. I explained my quandrey like this. "I've got a bad shoulder ,I'm left handed and I've got short arms. I don't want to spend a fortune on something that I may not stay into. Can ya help me?" He looked around for a minute and came back with a bow that he thought would do what I was asking on all fronts. The bow was a Reflex Excursion. It's got a 60-70 lb draw weight and is surprisingly smooth. He had to back it down to 60lbs and adjust the draw length to the lowest setting of 25". It came with a 4 pin site and a 2 fingered rest, which I'll probably be replacing. Adding in a peep ,a stabilizer ,a release and 1 dozen carbon arrows and I walked out with it for less than $350.

I started shooting it last week at 10 & 20 yds. I'm shooting every afternoon for about an hour or until my arm doesn't want to work right. Nobody bothered to tell me or remind me about the muscles that I haven't used for the last 20 years. Dang, my arms and shoulder muscles sure are sore! The one thing that I am noticing is that it seems to be coming back easier ,so maybe it needed a little breaking in like me.

I imagine I'll have questions off and on so I'll get back with ya'll later.

Welcome. The reason its getting easier is not the bow but your muscles getting use to the 60lb draw weight. Personally I find about a dozen arrows a session everyday is enough for practice and as I get closer to the start of season about two dozen. That's just how many I practice with. That doesn't tax my old muscles and don't end up getting frustrated by losing accuracy after too long a session.

Once again welcome.

Thanks for the advice. I've been shooting for the set time to relearn this thang. I might have to shoot 10-20 time and leave it at that. My shoulder has been threatening me with a visit to an Orthopedic Dr if I keep overworking it.  "Arthor Itis" and "Burs Itis" have been with me for the last couple of months.
