Hornady twist rate
« on: June 29, 2007, 03:20:40 PM »
hello
I have a question on barrel twist. I got a box of hornady bullets that say twist rate is 1-12  and would like to know what this means in terms of barrel twist rate.
should these bullets only be used in rifles that have the same twist rate that is on the box or is that the minimal amount of twist?
 thanks for any input

matt

hello sk330lc
yes they are A-max bullets for a 30cal at 168 gr
I have been shooting these bullets and they work better then the 168 gr match sierra bullets so I bought  another box of hornady bullets yesterday.
know with what you said I may take them back and try a different kind.

any ideas on what bullet to try  and what  will  works best with a 1-10 twist for shooting out to 300 meters  ???

thanks matt

You may not find any bullets that work better. Recommended twist rates usually mean the minimum where they work best. I would not think a 1 - 10 would be that much different. If you were trying to shoot them in a slower twist (slower than 1 - 12) then they may not stabilize. In general slow twist means shorter bullets and faster twist means longer bullets in any caliber. If these bullets are giving satisfactory results, there is not reason to change.

'Scuse me for stickin my 2 cents in here, but Hornady makes a 178gr A-Max, & if I'm not mistaken, a faster twist calls for a heavier bullet, so if your rifle has a 1-in-10 barrell, the 178gr bullet just might provide that last little bit, especially if you're going out to 300yds. Like I said, just my 2 cents. jd45

MattinPa.     AS LaOttO222 Said These Bullets should shoot Fine out of your 1-10"Twist Barrel..   you might have to play with powder type and weight to get the best accuracy.   That's the Fun in Reloading.
