Palmer Alaska
« on: June 29, 2007, 04:07:42 PM »
My son-in-law and daughter have just moved to Palmer AK.    So when do I need to visit, and what animals can I visit for in that area of Alaska?   Also, any salmon or other large fish swimming by in that area?

In checking the area, I saw that over 200 homes were for sale in a town of about 6,000 population which seemed a bit excessive.  Is there a reason for the high amount of homes for sale other than the obvious?

Thanks for any help given

Though the town of palmer itself if pretty small, if they are talking about homes for sales, it probably includes the surrounding area, which is pretty large.  Many people also have places they rent, mostly in the summer, and then sell if the price is right.

If you want to come for wildlife viewing, now would be the time to come.  The salmon are in the streams up that far already.  I have a friend who lives in wasilla which is fairly close to palmer, and she was been working her fish wheel (subsitance) for reds.  You can see bears and moose this time of year also.  Maybe a caribou, but that is a really big maybe in that area, not all too many around.

Actually, I love to hunt and fish, but know nothing of the seasons or type of animals hunted or caught in that area.  Any help would be appreciated.

Glad to help.  In that area, the king salmon are caught right now, the reds are starting to run also.  The reds will run through august, which is when silvers usually start, and silvers last the longest, into septermber.  Different rivers in the area will have different runs and regulations, so make sure you check those.  Trout and dolly varden and some places grayling are really good in these rivers especially while the salmon are running.

Bear hunting is allowed year round, but prefered in the spring for better hides and meat.  Black bear is year rounds, pretty much any time, make sure and check regs for non-resident requirements.  Brown bear is seasonal with spring and fall hunts.  Moose and caribou hunts start at the end of august and go into mid september.  Goat and sheep hunts are in october and november.  (some september in some places)

Rabbits, grouse, squirrels are year rounds and have high daily limits.  These are all covered under a special out of state small game permit which is nice.

If you want to know more specifics about the area, look up the hunting and fishing regulations from the alaska dept of fish and game website, they have both entire documents online, and gives all the information you need to know.
