308 Winchester

I've been wondering why Remington does not offer the 308 Win in the M700 BDL or CDL?  I know they offer it in the heavy barrel models of the 700, the SPS, and the M7 but why not in a better looking rifle like the BDL or CDL?

Could it be because of competition between their own 7mm-08?  If so, as popular as the 308 is one would think they would want in on the more popular of the two.

As you can tell, I want a CDL M700 in 308 Win!  I would take a BDL but prefer the CDL.  The main reason I don't want a M7 is because I love Leupold dual dovetail mounts and as far as I know you can only use one piece bases on a M7.  It may sound silly but that is the reason.

Well to answer your first question,I dont know.I too think it may have to do with the 7-08.I know they offer the .308 in the SPS regular barrel because a buddy of mine has a stainless SPS.(they are also chambering the Titanium II models as well)

As far as 2 piece bases on the Model 7,they do make them now.They have to be the newer version Model 7 with 2 rear holes,but Burris,Warne and Leupold all make them.

I had a 700VLS in 308, but it eventually got too heavy. (my hunting style changed)
Would have loved to replace it with another 308, but they didn't make it in what I wanted...their loss...


PS: The Mountain rifles would be a GREAT platform for the 308...

Agreed, and a big reason why I haven't gotten one, the .308 is far and away my favorite caliber.

Taken from the Remington website, here is the current offerings from Remington in .308.  They probabloy don't offer the .308 in a CDL because the Model 7 is the premier short action rifle at Remington.  In the Model 7 CDL it probably is waht you would get in a straight CDL anyway.

As far as the BDL goes, the BDL days may be numbered.  If Remngton wouldn't have come out with the CDL, the BDL may have survived.  But I don't think it looks good for the BDL.  With the CDL and SPS, the BDL really doesn't have much to offer that is different or better than what is already offered.

With the new owners that will more than likely demand performance from the bottom line, the Model 7 could also be in danger if those imported 798's and 799's get legs.

I too love the 308 Win.  It is the perfect all around caliber in the deep south.  Never have understood the 308 not offered in the Mtn Rifles either.  Looks to be an unloved stepchild for Remington.  At least I still have my 700 in '06 and 243 until I come up with a 308 in a 700. 

Speaking of Remington, today I went to the local gun shop and milled around thru the new rifle rack.  Don't know why so many people have complained of Remington's as of late but I still love 'em!  They are still the best feeling and balanced of all the rifles I have held.  They look great and are what I will buy in the future if nothing else changes.

Well they did kind of.They had a special run with Cabela's and made a MTN GUIDE series gun,chambered in 243,7-08 and 308.I am lucky enough to have one in 308 and 7-08.They are the Mountain Gun action and 22" barrel,set in the stock (made by Bell & Carlson) from the Titanium guns and finished off with a nice bluing.They are about 5 3/4 lbs,short and quick handling.My 308 with Talley Lightweights and a Leupy "ultralight" it weighs 6 1/4 lbs.Perfect for stalking through the mountains of Alaska or anywhere for that matter.I am planning on giving the 7-08 to my son next year when he turns 8.Should make a great youth gun as well.Hope this helps,if you want some pics let me know and I will get them out to you-Tim
