The .17 Remington and reduced loads ??
« on: May 30, 2003, 08:45:42 AM »
I am wanting to build a .17 cal. rifle and I am debating between the Remington and the Mach IV .  The factory cartridge would be the easiest in terms of brass , dies , fit into existing actions and so forth . Yet , for most of my shooting with this gun I figure moderate loads of around 3500 fps with 20 to 25 gr bullets will be enough . Has anyone done much with such moderate loads in the .17 Remington , preferably with the faster powders to milk alot of shots per can out of a lb. of powder  ??

Will the big (relatively) Remington case hold it's accuracy with reduced or moderate loads  ?

I really like the idea of the efficiency built into the Mach IV , but the bigger factory case looks to be a little more versiltile.  You could still use some 30 grainers at top speeds to make a little more gun out of the .17 bore .

Any opinions  ??

I've seen guy’s post about using Blue dot and 25grain bullets most say to start at around 5 grains and work up from that point.  I’ve used it in my 223 and lite bullets like the 35grain V-max have not really tried it in my 17rem
