ROLLOVER PASS

Can a lot of fish be caught there just fishing over the rail?  Are there any good fishing type motels in the Roolover pass area?  I want to stay away from Galveston.  What keeps the tremendous current from pulling your line?  Is it crowded on week days?

sorry to not reply sooner--been away for awhile. you probable have been and left by now.
a whole lot of folks fish rollover--seems like all at once--but fish are caught.
not my favorite place--mainly cause i like to wade and because of the crowd.
good fishing maps and a lot of driving and searching will provide many more places that are less crowded, as/more productive, and are far easier to get to.
rollover is legendary but there are many other places just as good--and i have never heard of it being that spectacular--it was just convenient fer folks with no boat and easy fishing.

Thanks for the response.  I plan on going when it gets cooler and in the middle of the week.  I'm old & fat and like the idea of sitting in a lawn chair and fishing.

Have fished Rollover numerous times over the years , in the past it was one of the best spots when trout were running. We have landed several over 7lbs there , when we go it is usually for night fishing  with lights. Glow in the dark shad is our bait of choice , when the trout are running you had better be ready . I have started fishing Matagorda Bay as of late and don't make it that side of the channel to often  anymore.

I hope some of you are still alive now, been about 3 years since last post here.
I have fish rollover 2-3 times, i like it when the tide is going out and on the gulf side,
put a ballon about 3-4 ft above a big croker or mullet and let the tide take it out, caught some big reds
there and rather large shark. I am not a big fish eater but love to catch em.

Has anyone been to Rollover pass lately, I did not know it was private owned, talked to a lady at GCA (via e-mail)
she said the county and some other organization was trying to close it for
fishing, for good,no use,stay out, don't even look through the fence.

Theyre trying to fill it in and close the channel to the gulf, Reason given was the cost of the dredging the intracoastal canal due to the sand coming in the pass.

They seem to have several reasons for wanting to close it.
dredging as stated.
pass causes beach erosion.
pass causes beaches to be dirty
I think i am going down the first of April and fish it a little may be the last chance
Lady at GCA told me their were no facilates but the water was still there
thats mostly all i need.

Yep all of the above!, there is a movement to try and stop it but who knows?

I am probably going down the first weekend in April to look around and try to wet a line, hopefully at rollover if not maybe the North jetty or some place. I have
lost all the guide numbers i had, besides i am going by myself and don't want to
pay $500.00 a day.

You should find plenty of places to fish. Rollover is still there but from what I can tell not much in the way of stores and such. If you use the ferry you may have to get what you need in Galveston. Or Winnie if you come by way of High Island. Its still pretty bleak down there.

  I fished Rollover Pass but I prefer driving down the road and camping by the old fort and walking out on the jetty to fish.  Its been quite a while but I've caught Reds that  with the head of the fish over my shoulder the tail was dragging on the ground.  I'm six foot. We would build a fire on the beach near the fort and fry fresh fish.  It was great.  We would walk out the jetty and in some places had to wade in chest deep water to reach across to the rest of the jetty.
We would watch for birds working above the water and cast out there.
After a bit you would feel your line moving slowly away and set the hook.
There is nothing spectacular about hauling them in more like towing in a log.
Now after the storm I understand there is not much left.
