300 Weatherby Bullet Questions
« on: July 04, 2007, 05:51:24 AM »
My neighbor has a 300 weatherby mag.  It has a 24" barrel.  He is currently shooting the weatherby ammo and is using the 150 gr SP bullets for deer/hog, etc.  With the prices skyrocketing on these shells he asked me about reloading for them.  My questions are the following:

What kind of Soft Point bullet does Weatherby use in there loaded rounds?  Is it Nosler, sierra, hornady, etc?

What is the approximate velocity of this round coming out of a 24" barrel?

If anyone has any loads that would approximate the factory I would appreciate that as well.

Thanks,

Bob

The factory Weatherby ammo uses the Hornady Spire Point in the 150gr loadings.

Muzzle velocity: 3540 fps  Muzzle energy: 4173 ft/lb

When I had my 300 WBY I would load up 180gr Nosler Partitions and use RL-22 for powder (dont remember the exact amount).I successfully took 2 moose and 2 bear with this load and all were 1 shot kills. If you are looking for something a little smaller,I would go with 150 or 165gr Accubonds.

Hornady interbonds will also work good!

Weatherby 150-grain factory ammo uses both Hornady SPs and Nosler Partition bullets - which does your neighbor buy?   Due to the very high muzzle velocities of the .300 Weahterby, if your friend shoots his deer within 200 yards he may want to go for either the 150 Nosler Partition or Barnes TS, or a heavier bullet like a 180 to keep the velocity down.  There is no good reason to use the 150s in this big case on game, the cartridge is more efficient with heavier bullets.  Unless you are recoil-shy of course.    :o

I load Berger 168 grain VLD bullets in mine and get great accuracy.  They're what I'll be using on antelope this fall.  They should work great on deer & hogs as well.

Make sure it's "him" that does the loading, as it's against the law for you to load ammo for anyone without a ammo mfg. license, even for FREE....  And, "if" for any reason he has a problem and/or injury of any kind, you WILL be liable...

I know Weatherby lists the 150gr vel. at 3540fps but I wouldn't try to duplicate that without working up very carefully.  Most of the factory loaded Roy's fall a bit short of this when actually chrono'd.  With the 24" tube it would be even tougher to achieve this.  I'd be happy with anything close to 3350fps w/ the 150's.  Brett

Sorry for the late post, I have used the 165gr SP Weatherby factory load for 5 antelope and 1 deer at ranges from about 40 (not lasered) to 368 yrds (lasered) and found it to be outragously destrutive even to the longest shot on a nice antelope buck. I didn't have time to start working up reloads before hunting so chose these because they where the most reasonable.

Now that I'm getting ready to start reloading, I've got some 200gr grand slams I'll be trying. From this experience I think 180gr and higher is the way to go. Or a premium bullet if going down to 165gr.
