What's your best scent/lure for black bear?
« on: July 06, 2007, 01:46:06 AM »
Anyone use beaver scent?

Who is it on this forum sells scents...somebody with the name "fox" or "hawk" in it? I can't find the post anymore. They have a web site.

I usually use "Ultimate" bear lure which is real sweet and strong smelling. Price ain't too bad.

One year my brother-in-law picked up a bottle and on a bait run up he opened up the bottle in the truck. I told him, "Don't spill that crap in my truck and double baggie it with a twistie tie and put it in the glove box."

We parked the truck on the Indian reservation at the casino lodge where we slept that night. The next morning when we left I come down and find what appears to have been a half dozen local dogs had been jumping up on his door scratching it all up. You could plainly see the muddy dog prints. There were no prints on my side of the door and I can only assume they could smell the lure in the glove box, despite being in a sealed bottle in plastic bags.

I was thinking of just using bird seed this year. They seem to really go out of their way for it    ::)

I make my own. My favorite is anise oil. I use bulk star anise and steep it in peanut oil on the back of our wood cook stove for several days.( any cooking oil will work)
Works great.

By the way nice picture. Your back yard?

I've used anise extract and vanilla mix - 1 bottle of each you can use the imitation vanilla - works good in spray bottle.I sprayed it around the bait and while in the tree stand I sprayed the area around me as a attractant the scent will carry quite a distance .

Youngbdy;
Okay, where do you apply the spry? I've been told fish guts, suspended in a burlap bag are the ultimate in stink bait for bears. I don't fish so want another option. I like the idea of anise but tell me, will Black Bears scent licorice from a mile or so. Will they be draw to the bait with this? Thanks. Oh, how large were the bottles of extract your picked up, 2 ounce size? Thanks for any help you can give me.

If you have access to some used fry oil or a lot of beacon grease slop some around the bait on the ground. That way everything that walks in it will track it around the country if there are bears around they will find it. I use a lot of peanut oil with fennel or anise mixed in and left on the back of our wood stove to steep for several days. Don't be afraid to do something out of the norm.

Thanks for your information, I have a further question for you. Do you rely on the scent being moved about from the ground only or do you also place something up off the ground so that air currents move the scent as well. And for youngbdv, I misspelled you handle. Sorry about that.

Anything that smells sweet. Try a bunch of old donuts. No need for fancy or expensive scents on bear. Put the donuts in a sack and hang it from a tree. If there is a bear(s) in the area they will come to eat it.

The eagle can see the leave fall from the tree, the deer can hear the leaf fall from the tree, only the bear... can smell the leaf fall from the tree.....

His smell his is best, and worst defense.

I missed this some how. I usually spread scent around trees and brush every time I bait.  If there is a bear around he will hear my 4wheeler and me banging buckets around I think bears see that as a dinner bell.

Another thing I like to do at the bait site is leave an old stinky sweaty T-shirt from that day hauling in the bait. I leave it at the base of the tree I'm in. Guess my theory is they will get used to the scent and or not be alarmed when I am actually in the tree waiting.

Doesn't seem to effect them but then again I suppose the big smart ones might stay away totally?

No...I'll stick to my belief they're nothing but big, fat, and stupid, with rat brains and stubby tails.

DEATH TO YOGI!

This is what I found at my shack two weeks ago. A price will be paid.

Two bird feeders wrecked and wood pile knocked over.
