Ruger Super Red Hawk,scoped
« on: July 06, 2007, 03:32:58 PM »
I have always been a long gun kind of guy.Recently my gun shop bought a bunch of pistols and rifles from an estate sale. One of them was a .44Magnum Ruger Super Redhawk with a BSA 2X scope.I kept eyeballing this really nice but BIG pistol. Finally the owner made me a super cash deal on it.I figured that if I was going to get into handguns then I might as well get a big one and one with a scope. In other words,go all out.
First time at the range after I bought it I tried it out with some .44 specials just to kinda get the feel of it.Nice feeling pistol. Then I loaded up some .44Magnum rounds.Whole different ball game as far as recoil. What I expected to be rather harsh was not bad at all.I really like this pistol.I am going to have to spend a lot of time with it to transform "rifle guy" into "Pistol guy".

Great start.  That'll last a lifetime.  I can't say the same for that scope though.  the few BSA's I've looked through were pretty dismal as far as optical quality.  I'd have doubts about the longvity of them on such a platform also.  You know, a "get what you pay for" thing and well, those are a bit on the cheap side.  If you're wanting to stay scoped, I'd look at relacing it.
As for the gun itself, I've been a Ruger fan for many years.  While I prefer the single actions, those RH's are a super strong, stoutly built chocie to bring afield.  Enjoy!

Congrats on the new toy, I've been hunting with a srh in 44 mag for quite a few years now and have been so happy with it I sent it to magnaport to have some customizing done on it. Accurate, durable, awesome working gun. What barrel length did you get? I had a 9 inch and had it cut to 7 1/2, then they threaded the end and put a magnabrake on it. That way it's still the original length and my holster will still work. The size of the gun does cut down on the amount of felt recoil imo, making it quite manageable. I've never been a scope on a handgun guy though. I used to hunt with a Dan Wesson 44 mag with a simmons adjustable (can't remember offhand what model or magnification) but even with a lot of practice I had a hard time getting the scope in line with my target quick enough. That's just me though, sounds like you're pretty happy with the set up and that's all that matters.
Congrats again,
Jim

I neglected to mention that it has a 7-1/2" barrel.I am not highly opinioned as to BSA scopes but this one was on the revolver and will be there until I either get dis-satisfied with it or something else better comes along.
If I had my druthers I would probably have a Leupold.
I did order an Uncle Mike's bandolier style holster from Midway.I like it.
I am still in the process of getting accustomed to accurately shooting a revolver.Takes a bit to get the "rifle guy" into the "pistol guy" mode.I've just never shot pistols seriously nor owned many. This too will change.
Thanks for the helpful comments and observations.
