It' been fun
« on: July 06, 2007, 09:09:47 PM »
:-[ Guys and Gals I have decided to throw in the towel when it comes to rifles and hunting animals. I have been a shotgunner for close to 50 years and never shot rifles much until the past couple of years. I figured out after much soul searching i love to hunt birds, rabbits and such but not  rifle hunting or shooting a rifle that much. I am a loaner for the most part with very few friends and have been bending to "friend" who hunts large game which is 100 percent out of character for me. I loved bow hunting but my shoulder will not allow it any more and rifle isn't my cup of tea. It just came to a head and I have to be true to mysef and to H..... with a so called friend who can't grasp what I have said here. I just decided to hunt birds and rabbits and such and ejoy my shotguns. The group of people that have responded to my posts have been great. I am not leaving GB's rather focusing on shotguns and bird hunting.Tim sorry for my change of heart but I need to be honest with me!!! I hope one day to hunt birds with a member or 2 on this site and really connect to the good people here. God Bless, Jess ;D

Jess -- To each his own! You have to do what you feel is right in your own mind and heart. To me, birds and deer and squirrels are all game animals to hunted with respect, killed cleanly when the time comes to kill, and used to the extent possible (food, hide). Hunting and trapping puts us in the natural world for a while, lets us have a rest from the stress and confusion of our workdays.

Wing shooting is my first true love in shooting and for quite some while now has gotten most of my time and efforts. Give skeet, trap or sporting clays a try depending on which best suits you and is available in your area. For me it's skeet. We have an entire wing shooting section here devoted to just shotguns but it seems not so many folks to hang out there.

Handguns follow next in line for me with rifles clearly falling into third place for my time and efforts. Still I like all but shotguns for me are first.

You make it sound so sad to go shoot and enjoy a shooting sport you love. There is no shame in that  8)
Sounds to me like you love "the action and on your toes response" it takes to enjoy birds and flying clays.
I recommend taking a "light hearted" fun Handi, such as a 22 Hornet or a 223 and pop some water filled ballons, milk jugs, or some steel plates set at varying ranges.
It's easy to get too anal about being perfect, and loosing sight on having fun. Each person is different, be it a high school boy with an 80yr old, $80 Mauser and a ton of ammo, or a 50yr old man with a beautiful $1500  over and under blasting clays as fast as they can be thrown.
Have fun..

;D there are time when crow tastes better with salt and pepper but this crow is plain and well you get the picture. I went to the range today and blew off the anger that has been building up took my Handi Ultra in 223 and my BPS to the range today and had a blast. I forgot the fun part of this and shot better today than i have in months.Didn't drive tacks with my 223 but shot close to an inch for 15 groups I shot. The I went to trap and skeet 22/23 on trap and broke 19 on skeet. That's not to bad on skeet about the best I ever do on that range. Right on my average for trap. I said that to get to the real point, I will continue to shoot rifles and buy a Ultra Comp from Tim if it's still for sale and will hunt if I can ever draw a tag. What I need most is to find the friend i haven't had since i left the USAF in 1988 which I found very difficult in the civilian world. Military men and women are just a different breed and that part of the military life I do miss. GB shotguns will always be my first love and rifles a distant second but it is enjoyable when you sit at a bench or walk in the field and enjoy the moment and forget what's going on outside or at home for those few days we can spend afield. I need to spout off to get "Fun" back into a sport I  have been doing for close to 50 years.

                                                                 God Bless All,
