OT - Lake Texoma is going over spillway.
« on: July 07, 2007, 05:59:50 AM »
For those who are interested you can watch it at the links below. Each site is providing a live stream. Looks like it started at about 9:15 - 9:30 this morning.
This is only the third time in the 60 or so year history of this lake that it's happened. Predictions are that it will crest at about .5 - 1.5 ft. over the flood pool level. Flood pool level is 640 ft. above sea level. In 1990 the level rose to 645.5 ft. I hear it was quite a sight to see.

Send some of it here. We're in a 100 year record drought and can't buy rain for nuttin. It's misting out here but that's it and that seems all we can get this year. Our normal rainfall is closer to 60" than to 50" and so far I don't think I've had 10" this entire year and that was mostly in January and February.

Bill we've been in drought here for 3 years. Remember the wildfires of last year and the later end of the year before. We've had enough rain in two months to make up for 3 years though as far as I'm concerned. Right here where I'm at, and I'm just educated guessing here, but I believe we've had around 27-30 inches since Memorial Day weekend.

Unreal.  I live about 25 miles south of the dam.  I think in June we got something like 19" of rain.  Certainly broke our drought.  Good luck with yours.

I live about 90 miles southeast of OKC and it looks like we will even have acorns on elm trees this year. ;D  We have been very dry with wildfires for 2 years and now it is over. Wells and ponds that were dry are full again and it is so green here.  My wife and I drove through our deer lease today and it was so lush and green.  Our deer should have good food and good antlers this year.  I have been mowing my yard (2 acres) about every third day for 6 weeks now, rain or shine...we are ready for the sun.

When I moved to Idabel in EXTREME Southeast Oklahoma 3 years ago it was crazy....no grass, burn ban until October, no leaves on trees in the summer time, corn blowing away, duststorms.......etc.  This year it is like Central America here.  It is lush.  I would (if I could push my mower through the standing water in my yard) have to cut my grass every 4-5 days this summer versus once every 2 months that first year.  Crazy, crazy change in rainfall.  Now the farmers are going to lose corn from too much water saturating the roots.

I am planning on going to the Red River on Monday and then on to Hugo Lake Monday to see just how high the water is.

For all of the complaints at work about so much rain, all that I have to say is "at least it isn't 105 this year".  That and I am not paying $250 light bills to Choctaw Electric co-op.

Looks like the prediction now is for 640.25 tomorrow sometime. The low pressure system that kept swirling around OK, north Texas, and southern Kansas has finally lifted and we've had some relief. Lawns are actually getting mowed! Not mine yet though, I'm lazy.  ;D
Texoma is a huge lake on the OK/Tex border formed by the convergence of the Red and Washeta rivers. When I was in high school here we learned that it is (at that time anyway) the seventh largest man-made lake in the world.
I don't get to observe the Red as much as I do the Washeta, but the Washeta has been running brimming full for over a month and just receded some last Wednesday.
One day about two weeks ago the local radio station reported at 2:14 pm that the Red River had risen six feet that day since 12 noon.
The whole state has had flooding problems over the last couple of months, as well as north Texas. Many have perished and many homes and businesses have been severely damaged. We all are glad for it to subside some now but are not looking forward to the 90+ temps with the HIGH humidity.
I rode around and looked at the lake some yesterday. It's amazing how much water it's holding. Roads, all campgrounds and boat ramps, are closed. Some people are having to boat from their homes over their flooded roads just to commute to and from work and such. Many lake-front homes are experiencing flooding around the foundations and some are even two to three feet in water. I wasn't here in 1990 so this is the first time I've gotten to see what a monster this lake can become.
I bet the hogs will be movin'-a-plenty when it starts receding though.  ;)

Just had to change the spelling of Wash - i - ta to Washeta. The correct spelling is with the "i" but apparently the censoring system here at GBO hasn't been updated with Indian names.  :D

i grew up about 100 miles west of Texoma, on red river, where pease river dumps into
the red the river bottom is 1 mile wide (by the bridge) the bridge is about 30 feet
above the river bed. almost every spring the water would get with 5-6 foot of the bridge,
once i saw it get high enough to splash over the bridge (mile wide)
that is lots of water, doesn't take long to fill or over flow a lake.

Pool elevation is 640.54 feet on Wednesday 11Jul07 Time: 0500 hours.

WOW!
We had some more rain Monday night and Tuesday morning here. Even more was had upstream on both the Red and Wash-i-ta rivers. A whole new crest date and elevation now.
Have a look at the video player to the right of the KXII home page. Click on the little pic at the bottom of the player that says "RAW VIDEO: Fish out of water at spillway" and you'll see how much it is flowing over now, about six inches or more and it is really covering the whole spillway now. This is a cool vid showing a fish coming over and slipping all the way down the spillway. There are other links there also for more video and coverage.
To get a full screen view, scroll down and look to the right of the page. There are links there also. Click the link (it's a pop-up) then follow the directions to get a full screen view.

Here's a couple of pics I got from my daughter-in-law.

The water is normally about 25 feet below this bridge. I cross this every day.

This is awesome! Used to live just a short ways from this bridge. Water is normally about 20 feet below this one, and only wide as a small creek would be.

It's even higher now than when these pics were taken.  :o

Like the new avatar pic too, Tim

All that rain yall are getting, has even fed rivers and streams and fed into South Texas as well. I hunt Zavala county every year...and last December and January, all the tanks were dry...deer were very skid dish ...the little water that did remain in a couple of tanks...was barely enough to make a puddle...but the deer had to water...so the predators were in the catbird seat.....I had more "encounters" between jackrabbits, coyotes, and even saw a bobcat go after some ducks ....this year.....so far parts of Zavala county have already had over 20 inches of rain...tanks are full...creeks are flowing....all kinds of vegetation...maybe the quail will be back this year...since they were non existent last year...I am already getting excited about the December trip....the thought of adequate rain means more vermin...which means more varmints, which mean more opportunity to bobcat, coyote, hunt. The wild hogs should also be prolific and since the cover is so lush , it will be easy to see where they have been feeding , and try to rid our part of Texas from the feral hog...( yeah right).......now we just need a 2 or 3 inches per month through October...and we'll have a great time in Texas.

Hey lik2hunt,

Does that second bridge lead into a residential area at Texoma State Park?

Just got back from our anual Chinook Salmon fishing trip. Record high snow pack turned the river into a raging torrents. Washed away the bank and 5ft of the cook house hanging over the river.

With the muddy water the fishing for the first seven days was very poor, the
last three days produced some fishing alas rather small fishes, nothing over
35lbs. We ended up 2 fish short of our 24 limit. Only a single Grizzly came fishing all the time we were there.

It was a fun trip with a flat tire on the motor home and a wrong size wheel wrench on hand on the Alaska Hghway 200 miles form nowhere,in the rain. A lady trucker stopped for us she had the proper size wrench.

My friend fell on the slippery rocks and we had to call in the chopper to get
him to Atlin to get patched up with 16 stitches.

When we got back to Atlin we found the ice plant had no ice to keep the fish cool. We found some ice in the local store at a very high price. But we got the fish home in good shape. All in all a very eventful trip, we even found 3 bottles of overproove liquor that some one buried 15 years ago gratis of the flood.

After the gang delved into the hootch life did no appear to be that bad after
all. Nothing is ever as bad that it could not be worse. Yes the weather is creating havoc world wide thanks to man, and it is not getting any better.

Yep sure does. That is the Rooster Creek Bridge just past the airport and the golf course at the state park. Amazing huh?

Amazing huh?

Sure is.  We had lunch in Durant a couple of Saturdays ago and then ambled over towards Kingston.  The water at that time was still three or four feet below the bridge.  I imagine the park is in pretty bad shape now, too.
