30-30 for Javelina?
« on: July 07, 2007, 12:56:02 PM »
I've got a TC 14" 30-30 bbl that I bought many years ago with the idea of hunting Javelina with it. For one reason or another, it never happened. I'm looking to change all that this next spring (I hope), and take it on a handgun Javelina hunt here in AZ (if I can draw the tag). It's open sights now, but I plan on having a low power handgun scope on it by then (older eyes + open sights = lots of misses).

I have some Sierra 125 gr Gamekings loaded for it, and I have some 150 RN for my levergun. I'm curious as to what you all would recommend for a good Javelina round? They're pretty small, and not at all hard to kill, I've taken them with a 357 revolver. I'm looking for a good, up to (maybe) 100 yard load that won't tear the little buggers to pieces. What are you using?

Thanks.

If your TC accept the brass you have used in your lever - and the accruracy is good enough with the 150 gr in your TC - I would do it simple!

little pigs are about an ideal usage for cast in a 3030. A 150-180 flat nose cast at about 1500 fps would be a great load

I really like the accuracy of the 125 Sierras in my Super 14. Obviously either that 125 or most any of the .30-30 150's will do fine on javelina.

I appreciate the replies. I was mostly just looking for a load that doesn't blow big holes in the little critters. That cast bullet idea sounds interesting. Are you using a gas check at that velocity or no? The 125 Sierra's fly pretty strait, I just haven't hit anything but paper with them.

Try a blue dot load with your 125 sierra.  it will do the job with very little damage to the animal.

I've been using the 125 Noslers for a while now on deer.  Drops them like they were hit by a tank.  On pigs and Javelinas though, headshots are best, cause they will disrupt the innards.

My load in a 10" T/C is Remington bulk 150 core lokt bullets and WW748 powder.  Tough enough to go thru skin and bone, but doesn't blow up the meat.
