Hey Intodeep... thanks for this thread. My next project barrel will be in this week, and this is a handy reference for a starting point for the carriage  :D

Rickk,

No problem. I'm glad this has turned out to be a well watched post. GGaskill has been nice enough to re-work my "elementary" AutoCad drawings so, there should be a sled base drawing to post in the near future.

There finally is a drawing for InTooDeep's sled rails.  Click the image below for a large one.

Suggestion, change those three sharp angles, two in front of the trunnion cheek and one behind to radii.  Stress risers apply in wood also.

You mean the inside corners?

George,

Yes the three inside corners.  The two in front that come down from the elevator angle and back up to trunnion base I would make one radius.  The one behind the trunion base a radius.  A sharp angles at either of those places will focus stress and could start splits along the grain.

Even then cross bracing needs to be both above and below those points.  A base below and a trunnion reinforce above.

Thanks, for posting the close up on your elevation mechanism, I have seen a lot worse welding jobs. It looks fine to me, but if you wanted a cleaner look, one could drill and tap the 3 flats on the 10 mm nut , then thread some rods to fit the 3 taped holes, you would probably have to chase the the nut with a 10 mm tap after you were done. Just another way to skin a cat. No offense C.W.  Tracy
