BP loading for 1000 yard target competition
« on: July 07, 2007, 06:59:17 PM »
Can you get enough power out of BP to compete in 1000 yard target shooting.  I am using a Buffalo Classic and want to load black powder cartridges.  Any suggestions would be helpful.

Thanks in advance.

Hey BigBossMan;

Them big BP guns will shoot to 1,000 and well beyond. It does require some hyper elevation on the rear sight but they get there --- eventually.

I read an account somewhere of a fella doing right well at 600 yds with a Buff Classic.  Apparently some folks have had their 45-70 chambers enlarged to 45-90 chambers, also.    A 45-70 will get there (1,000) yds.   When I shoot my trapdoor at 500 meters, the Buffington sight is flipped up and has quite the arc.    IMHO the rifling in the Buff Classic requires a hard bullet, Whereas in the trapdoor, I can shoot pure lead with great results.   Current conventional wisdom, is that it takes a fairly long bullet to keep stability at 1,000.  Long like 1.5 inches.  Good luck

Lyman has a new bullet that weighs 490 grains #457677 and allows you to seat it with the front three lube rings in front of the case.  I figure that you can stuff about 75-80 grains of powder in there.  I am using 70 grains volume of a substance similar to BP that starts with a P and ends with a select.  I could go another 10-15 grains if I compress a bit.  I get 1 and 1/4 groups at 100 and less than 2" at 200 with them so far

BBM, this bullet will make it to 1000 yds out of your H&R BC
Lee 459-500-3R   - 482gr - Ballistic Coefficient   534 - 1:20
Starline
Br2 Primer
Swiss 1.5 75gr
Wad - Wax Paper
COAL - 2.900
Velocity 1285
122 MOA ... Pedersoli with 0 MOA @ 100yds

Out of 10 rounds, including sighters (in 20 - 45mph gusting winds) ... 4 shots whacked 'Homer'.  Was a first time shooting this bullet at 1000
He is a steel buffalo silhouette that measures 48" W  x 64" L

I have tried the Paul Matthews 457667 out of a BC and Pedersoli at 600yds and can't get it to fly the way I'd like to see it.  Your experiences may vary.  If you want to try a bullet that really can be loaded out of the case - give the Paul Jones MiniGroove a try:
https://www.sageoutfitters.com/cgi-bin/commerce.cgi?search=action&category=BLLT&keywords=all

BTW ... any of the bullets listed on Sage Outfitters are fine - fine cast bullets and are the predominate ones used for BPCR shooting.  My suggestion would be to buy a box of 50 of each and give them all a ride in your H&R ... starting with 70gr and up charges

Dodd, got some more Lee 459-500's that I'm going to try again at 1000yds this week -
45-70   Lee 459-500 3F   493gr   547BC   Bhn 11.1 Starline Br2   Meteor 3F Sifted 70gr   NewsP Wad over P'Hole  0.020 Felt Wad   2.977 COAL   1237fps
The Meteor is a 1973 vintage powder that was made by Noble in Scotland

Also, have 50 Doc Lay 'Money Bullets' loads for a 1st Time Try @ 1000:
45-70   PJ MiniGroove   535gr   361BC  1:20   Starline   Br2   Meteor 3F Sifted 75gr   0.03 LDPE   3.333 COAL !   1181 fps

Gonna be using a Uberti Hi-Wall this trip

You can get 73 grains of 2F goex in a Winchester case with less then .400 compression and keep all grooves covered.
That is my load for the long range Gong shoots 1000 yds.
Even the Lyman 457-125 RN bullet makes it with out a problem.
The only problem I can see with your Buff Classic would be the sights and not really having a good way to mount a long range tang sight.
My .45-70 Sharps needs 182 points above a 32 point zero at 200 yards for 1130 yards. Or 150 points above the 200 yard zero might be a better way to say it.

Lead pot:  I have a Pedersoli LR Creedmoor mounted in a cut out on the wrist of the H&R stock.  At 1000yds, using a PJ Creedmoor, 75gr Schuetzen FFg (sifted) in an R-P case, 1162 fps and with 170 points on the staff - rang Homer 3 out of 5 shots
