500 s&w h&r
« on: July 08, 2007, 12:45:36 PM »
well i am getting stuff ready to shoot the beastie  i have a 500 s&w handi rifle   i have on hand 275 gr barnes xpb  and the 325 gr barnes spitzer xpb  i have lil'gun, and 5744 powders on hand what others should i try? N-110 ?  I am using it on big corn fed indiana whitetails out to 200 yrds or so.  what loads are you guys shooting?      i am curious as i am a short LOP so i have a youth wood stock and a sims labs pad and a 4 inch eye relief scope also have a butstock ammo carrier that holds 10 rounds so it will all help tame it a bit  i hope    thanks a bunch!

I shoot three loads with the same bullet with my 500 and I have posted them here several times but here you go....the H110 load is very vigorous to say the least...

In my 500 S&W I shoot the most loads with 10 grains of unique under 440 grain lead GC bullet. That load is just plain fun.  My medium load uses 15 grains of Titegroup under the same bullet and my "elephants in the yard" load load uses 40 grains of H110.  The bullet I use in all my loads is a very hard cast gas checked bullet with a 90% meplat from Ranger Rick in Alaska.  http://www.lsstuff.com/ranger-rick/

I am also working on a BP load using a Lee REAL bullet and FFFg...I will post when i get the kinks out of that one.

For the Cast Performance .500 bullets.
Does anyone have the Nose to Crimp distance for the 370, 400 or 440 grain bullets?
Thanks, Mike

I got the Ranger Rick 700gr bullets today, they weigh between 680gr and 695gr, are 1.367" long and well cast. Loaded to the crimp groove, the COL is 2.315" in untrimmed Starline brass, they touch the lands at 2.405" in my barrel. The bullet on the right is a 440gr Cast Performance.

What a bullet!!!

Just for an example Tim.

690 grain .500 Cast Bullet
COL 2.315
Case 1.625
Bullet 1.367 long
24.0 grains of Reloder 7

PSI would be about 27,440 (thinking these are in the hard cast range)
Load Density 90%
22" Barrel
8 lb gun
Velocity would be about 1130
Energy would be about 1960
Recoil would be about 31.6

Momentum would be in the REAL SERIOUS range

What a cartridge!!!

Where did you get that?

Do you know what the BHN is?

Thanks Tim....

Those are Ranger Rick's bullets that Eskimo36 posted about earlier in this thread.

http://www.lsstuff.com/ranger-rick/

Here's load data... 30gr Lil'gun will do 1340fps in an Encore handgun, just wonder what they'll do in a 22" rifle barrel!!!

Rick sent me 100 of his new 610 gr bullets - much longer nose, will try them next week in my 22" handi barrel.  The last load data I got was a little hot.  I'm going to start with 26 gr of Lil Gun and see what it does?  I have  used the 440's up to 2068 ft.  No point in that hot.  1800 fps is all the "fun" I need!

I've shot the 440gr CP with up to 33gr Lil-gun at ~1750 fps, have loads up to 35gr, but haven't shot em yet. I also have a bunch of Swageall's custom jacketed .500s to shoot, but that may be a while. ;)

Shot the 700gr Ranger Rick bullets in my .500 day before yesterday, best group so far was with 29gr Lil'gun, velocity was 1430+fps, got 2 more loads to shoot, 29.5gr and 30gr, accuracy has been getting better with each ˝gr step up, but I ran out of time. Recoil is substantial, to say the least, even in the 10˝lb Ultra stocked configuration with about 2lbs of lead in the stock and Limbsaver recoil pad. :o

Sorry for not following up... Don't mean to cast ANY QUESTION on Ranger Rick!! He is a GREAT GUY with an excellent product!!

Turns out there was a problem was in my payment...seems his Email address somehow got a period at the end. That shouldn't be there and because of it, he didn't get my PMT from PAYPAL... No ones fault just an honest mistake.

Rich expressed my order to me at his cost. (He didn't need to do that. Nor did I ask him to) I got them in a couple days. NICE BULLETS!!!!  I loaded up a box and a half with a couple different powders and charges for testing. Seems 100 ain't NEARLY enough!!! ::) ;D SO, I ordered an additional 100 as well as some very nice 300 GR 45's!! I received that order with in a week!!!

GREAT guy with a GREAT product offering GREAT SERVICE!!! Highly recomended.
