243 Superlight!
« on: July 08, 2007, 01:39:24 PM »
I recently bought a 243 Superlight barrel from Holahead, fitted it to an NP frame and put the synthetic monte carlo stock set that I just got from H&R on it, mounted a 2-7x32 Nikon Prostaff in lapped super low Burris rings, it's all ready to play now!! I hope the Mossy Oak stock and Realtree scope doesn't clash!!! :o ;D

Tim,
That is a perfect example of the one handi that can do it all if it shoots well.  Light, camo, weatherproof stocks, versatile scope, near and far, varmints to deer...good job.  Now get it to shoot.  I shoot the vmax bullets in my 243 Vanguard...

Did ya tell her she was real funny!! ;D

Thanks, I'll give it my best, between Stimpy, Howard NZ and a couple others that have had good results with the superlight, I should be able to get it to shoot decent. ;)

Tim

I never checked to lands , just loaded to 2.825 COL , thats .025 longer than Ammo Guide calls max OL . that will give me between 5/8" and 3/4" groups @ 100 with 3 shots .

Hope this helps .

I'm touching the lands at 2.773", the Speer #13 calls for 2.635", guess I'd better not try 2.825"!!! :o

Dave,

Stimpy's shooting the same 100gr Speer bullet in the same model NEF, the Superlight, but they obviously have much different throats!! :D Since Superlights are notorious for being finicky, I thought I'd use Stimpy's good experience to my advantage!! ;D

Thanks,

You're right about this model being finicky. I bought a youth model for my daughter eight years ago and have since then found only two bullets that shoot accurately in it: the 100 gr. Nosler Partition and the 100 grain Speer Grand Slam. Both required a middle-of-the-road load of H4831 and CCI 250 primers....and then I had to pray and hold my mouth in a certain way and the stars had to be aligned. But with your Handi wizardry, I'm sure you'll have that rifle shooting in no time. I'm sure I'm not the only one anxious for a range report.

Right now, I'm working on a load with Barnes 85 gr. Tripleshocks and H414. I'll let you know how they shoot after I get a chance to get to the range.

I've got loads to try, and would have gone yesterday for a bit before it got hot, but the kitchen faucet busted night before last, so I spent the day fixing that, one of those 2 hr projects that turned into 6hrs, needless to say, by the time I got done, it was waaay too hot to head to the range, Maybe next week if someone doesn't have a project for me to do. :-\

Just for your info , i checked my 243 SL and i hit the lands at 2.875 , that would only leave .220 of the bullet in the case neck so i don't think i'll try to reach them .  :o

I got out 3 new Hornady brass , sized and trimed to recommended case length for the test with my Lee case trimer and used 3 bullets that were the same OL .

I still don't understand why the 58gr V-max shoot better with so much of a jump to the lands but if it works i'm not going to complain .  ;D

Thanks Stimpy, I appreciate the info. ;) Looks like I'll get to the range this Wednesday, I've got the 100gr Speer loaded to .010" off the lands at 2.763" to start with. ;)

I'm in the middle of replacing the windows in our house, but yesterday evening I took time to go to the range with the 243 superlite barrel and a 30/30 barrel. I started off with the 243 and a load of 40.5 grains of H414 behind the Barnes TS at a COL of 2.740, which is 0.035 off the lands in my rifle. Accuracy was not too shiny, about 2.0 inches at 100 yards for a couple of 3 shot groups. I'm thinking of bumping up the load 1 grain of powder and seating the bullet deeper another 0.015". Barnes recommends starting at 0.050" off the lands.

The 30/30 barrel proved to be more accurate. With a load of 34.5 grs. of W748 behind 170 grain Hornady FP crimped with a Lee FCD, I was shooting about 1.25" for 3 shot groups at a hundred yards.

The TSX usually shines at near max or max loads in every chambering I've shot them in, so don't give up on em. Using their TSX loading guidelines, you can go up to 46.5 to 47gr H414 working in ½gr increments starting at 41gr as long as you don't experience any pressure signs. Because the TSX likes hot loads, it may not be the best choice for the Superlight barrel, they tend to like moderate loads with standard bullets from most reports, so good luck, I was gonna try em in mine, I have a box I got on sale for $14, but dunno if they'll work that well, I'll be hoping the best for ya!! ;)

Tim, you need to move over to God's side of the state.  No such thing as a rain out.

I loaded up some more 85 gr. TSX for my superlite barrel this evening. Not sure when I'll get to the range next, as I went this morning. I have some window trim to put on and other honeydo's on the list. I upped the load to 42.0 grains of H414 and pushed the bullet in another 0.015", so they are 0.050" off the lands.

I would welcome a rainout. We're about to dry up and blow away here in Wyoming. I'll trade you 10 sunny, hot days for 5 rainy, cool ones.
