Range report on my 22-250
« on: July 08, 2007, 03:36:35 PM »
Went & shot my 22-250 this morning. Was shooting 100 yds. Had shell I loaded with Hornady V-max 55 gr. in new Remington brass, CCI mag. primers, loaded 5 each of 38.1 gr. through 38.5 gr. of H-380 & the 38.5 gr. loads grouped at 1 1/4" at 100 yrds. Beat the heck out of the 3" groups with the Winchester 40 gr. hollow points out of the white box! Seems like its getting better & I'm gonna keep bumping it up & see what happens. If I remember right, I think in the Speer book, 41.0 gr. is the max with H-380 & mag. primers (I don't have the book here in the house with me). I used the Winchester shell to set my seater die, so I guess when I get my best group, I'll need to experiment with the seating depth alittle. One think I can say is this is the most fun I've had in a long time. I'd really like to thank all of you guys for your help & support!!! I'm gonna try some of stimpy's suggestions when I finish with the H-380 (I primed all of my new brass with CCI mag. primers). I bought some Varget & some Winchester primers that I gonna try next. Also got some 50 gr. V-max. Just wish I had more time to soot.

The Hornady 6th shows 40.6gr H380 as max for the 55gr Vmax, Hornady brass, WLR primer, with a COL of 2.350".

goodwrench

Don't give up on the H380 quite yet , Hodgdon named the powder because it was 38 grains of this powder and a 50 grain HP that was giving the best groups , almost one hole at 100 . The Varget and the 55's will also shoot VERY well too .

The most important part is you had FUN .

I'm guessing my accuracy will diminish before I hit close to max. It just seems like mine is liking the hotter loads for some reason. I think I have about 10 more cases with mag. primers seated then I'll try the Winchesters. I don't have the Hornady manual, but  I do have Loadbook USA for 22-250, 270 Win. & 30-30 win. Also have Speer #13, Lyman #48 & the 2006 Hodgdon publication.

The Hornady 7th is available if you decide to get one, so is the Speer #14 now. ;) I bought the Speer #13 about a month or so ago, the #14 was just released. :-\

goodwrench...i don't blame you for trying to see if you can get "er...to shoot a little better..."but" ya might already be there..that's pretty decent shooting..i had a 22/250 handi it's favorite load was 38.1 of h-380...or...38.1 of w-760...shooting 55 grain bullet's...i never had accuracy issue's with that rifle...it did shoot 34.6 of varget about the same as the other powder's i mentioned...good luck !!

Thanks guys!! I'm gonna play with it & see what happens. I do love the gun, it might have 50 rounds through it & I think it's getting better the more I shoot it. I know it takes about 80 or so for it to break in right.

Some shoot great right out of the box, others might take 100 to 300 rounds to shoot best. You can speed that up usually with a little flitzing the bore, won't hurt a bit and can help quite a lot!! ;)

If I may suggest..........

Buy a box of factory Hornady 50 gr V Max.  I have never seen a 22-250 that did not like them.  Try them, then match that load best you can.  It's 50 gr V Max doing 3800 fps....................btw,  it just wrecks woodchucks.

Just try one box, save the brass, and see what you think...................let me know  ;)
