Help with 22-250 please...
« on: July 08, 2007, 10:15:57 PM »
Shot the new 22-250 with WWB a couple months ago. Accuracy was not good - 2" - 3" groups at 50 yards, but I got the scope set and called it a day. Since then I have gotten reloading dies and went yesterday with 40 grain Berger Varmint bullets over H335 and Varget. It took 15 shots to get a hole in paper. I had no idea where they were going. Finally got one in the edge of the  cardboard, and got the scope set again. Same 3" groups at 50 yards as last time. I didn't do anything except take it apart to clean it after the first trip. The scope and mounts are tight. I wanted to stay with lighter bullets to get the velocity, but what would work best with the twist in the Handi? Any other suggestions? Thanks.

Wow, thats pretty bad... I have a couple more questions.

 Was this a new barrel?
If it was not, how is its condition? I mean is it clean? How the muzzle look? You need to look close there could be a ding in the crown. You also may want to do a chamber/throat cast and see what it looks like in there.

If thats OK I would remove the scope and mount. Clean everything and re-install with lock tite and check that scope. Using a colimator move the POI up then over than down then back up. making the four corners of a box. Use about ten clicks each and you should see the POI make a nice box and with the last adjustment see the crosshairs return to origional position.

If no colimator is avalible, swap the scope for a known good one and go shoot it again. You dont need to site in, just be able to make a group.

Reading you explination, I suspect the barrel or scope to be your problem.

Mine scatters 40 grs. just as bad. It seems to like 55 gr. Hornaday V-MAX. Mine is down to about 1 1/4 inch with 38.5 gr. of H-380.

That powder (Varget) may be a tad slow for the light bullets, Winchester 748 or a little faster may do better.  I had good luck with the 40gr varmintathors and 748, got up to 40.2gr at a little over 4250 fps, but that was in a bolt rifle, I have a box minus three sitting here loaded with the now discontinued coated VLC's.   If you are gonna shoot the Coyotes you need to trade it in on a 17 Remington.   Larry

P.S. Take a good hard look at the crown and make sure it isn't hosed up.  Larry
