hooked on my 38-55 and 45-70 rifles
« on: July 09, 2007, 04:19:25 AM »
I have shot my 45-70 for a few months ago and have had a great time with it.  I picked up his little brother the other day and went to the range.  I bought one box of factory winchester 255 soft tips (pretty sure that was it) and I had tight groups at 25 and 50 yards :)  I know this is nothing new to any of you about the groupings , but my question is other than e-bay or midway where can I find cast lead bullets for my 38-55?  Anything that Midway has is on backorder and who knows when that can come in?  I have a buddy that told me I can just get the mold and he will make them for me, but I don't want to put him out unless I have to come to that.  I can just buy him a 12 pack when he makes them for me :)  Just wondering if anyone knew of some places I can buy some and maybe any other suggestions about reloading for this new toy of mine.  Thanks!

It would be best if you slug the 38-55 bore so you know what size bullets to buy, .379" bullets have been working for Handirifle in his new 38-55, but older barrels may need .380" to shoot well. He's getting his from Chey-Cast. Read the 38-55 article in the FAQs, lots of good info in in.

Redhawk,
My 38-55 H&R has a .380 bore and I have been getting some leading with .379 bullets.
I would advise you slug your bore. My rifle will just barely chamber a round with a .379 bullet.
I may have to turn the cases a little to use the .380 bullets.  In any event, before it leads up it appears that it is going to be very accurate. More accurate than any 45/70 I have used and that is a few.
PS  If your friend is a good caster you might consider abusing him a little. One of my friends knows far more about casting than I.
He gave me a few 40-65 bullets and they turned out to be the most accurate cast bullets I have ever fired. He had 300 more that I paid a premium for and I was really fortunate to get them.

If you want to spare $60, and have about 4 months wait, you can get in on this group buy.  They seem to think that this mold will be the cat's meow for the 38-55.  Just a thought.

thanks guys for all of the info!  My buddy is going to slug my barrel for me so I am sure to get the right size bullets.  Thanks again everyone!
