What powder, 44 Mag?
« on: July 09, 2007, 09:08:19 AM »
For rifles. if you had only one powder to use in the 44 mag, for all bullet weights, getting the best in velocity and accuracy, what would it be?

One of the twins W296 or H110. Both are the same made by Primex which is owned by Winchester and marketed by Hodgdon under both the Hodgdon and Winchester labels. There are none better so long as full power loads are your choice. If I wanted less than full power loads I'd go with H2400.

For full power loads (I’m assuming these are jacketed bullets) in every thing from 180 to 300 gr. you can’t beat H110.  For low power cast bullet loads I like AA#2.

Thanks, the info here seems to echo the folks at leverguns.com as well.

It's been a while, but I always used H110.

The 44 mag was my first cartridge to reload.  H-110 and the 44mag go together like biscuits and gravy, bread and butter, peanut butter and jelly, steak and shrimp....well you get the picture.

If I could only have one then it would be hands down, 2400.  It will do everything well.  I can slow it down and speed it up.  H110/296 are the choice with when top end speed is wanted but you can't slow them down much.  H4227/IMR4227 would also be in the running if 2400 wasn't available.
