New Line for Baitcasting Reel
« on: July 12, 2007, 02:11:38 AM »
I'm looking to spool up my new baitcasting reel. This reel will be used mainly for bass and walleye.  I never used a baitcasting reel for bass ...always a spinning reel.  I have used Spectron on big musky reels and like it alot.  However, it seams like overkill for bass and the like,  I'm not sure if I want to go with a braid or not. Does braided line tend to spook bass?  What do you guys use or dislike?

I am not a fan of braided line.  I know there are alot of folks who swear by it,but I find its a bit much.  I am  partial to go ole monofilament.  I like Trilene XT for most applications, but have been using Ande as of late.  Bought a couple of spools while visiting the coast.  It is a available only in bulk spools, about 700 and something yards for about $7.00.  good ole Stren is a good standby.

I use Powerpro super braid on my bait caster for bass with great success. It is 65# test and very thin. It saws threw heavy cover and pull the fish out. The color is white/gray and I camouflage it my self. I take a black and green  permanent markers and color the last 10 feet of line alternating black and green every foot. The other bonus is that it lasts for years. I also love the sensitivity and the rock solid hook sets. The reel is a Quantum  US300, medium in size and the rod is a 7 foot St Croix. It is my favorite system. The camo system give you the best of both worlds, camo on the terminal tackle end and high vis on the backing end.

Half my reels are spooled with braided line. Used it for years.
I fish pads, heavy grass, trees/ thick stick-ups, etc and never had a problem. Plus the size per strength issue can`t  can`t be beat,IMO.
Got some big bass in Florida and you`ve got to get-um to the boat to get a pic so you can put-um back for another day.
For me, I also like a "glass" rod on some of my combinations, like top-water.  Works for me.

I like Ande line best but for my bait casters, I'm going back to braided. Never had a problem with it spooking fish, don't know why it would? I want to start fishing the Columbia River more and to get jigs down you need a thin line because of the current. A guide todl me to use Fire Line and I could get 5/8th oz jigs down 30' easy. I don't like that stuff, got rid of it. Gonna try some 12# Spectra fron Bass Pro shops. 12# line at 4# mono dia equilivent.

i used braided line on all my baicasters until i got skunked at a tournament in a clearwater lake, i'm convinced the fish were spooked by the line. i was so mad i stopped at a dick's sporting goods on the way home and bought four spools of 10 pound berkley vanish on the way home and load up all my reels with it. after i cooled down, though, i realized that braid does have some advaantages when fishing a carolina rig, so i use a 6 foot mono leader tied to 20 pound braid. never had a problem with that.

I have never liked braded line. I always have liked monofilament.

Started using braids back when they first became available in my area. My first was "Lynch Line"(Late 80s). It was a white line, and like Cheese, I camo'd it with magic markers. My home lake has a lot of vegetation and timber. If you want to land fish of any size in this heavy cover, this is the kind of tackle it takes. Some of my baitcasters are also spooled with mono. I bought several bulk spools of the old "Silver Thread" in 12# and 17#. Haven't fished in the last 5yrs or so, but up to that point I tried most of the new lines as they became available. Haven't found any mono to date that works better than the old Silver Thread. Plan to get back into fishing this year, time to spool up the old baitcasters and wax the boat!!
