New guy has a really stupid arrow question
« on: July 12, 2007, 06:59:19 AM »
Howdy all,

I'm brand new to archery.  I just found a good recurve and some arrows at a garage sale, for the paltry price of $8, so it seems like now is as good a time as any to learn.

Some of the arrows are aluminum and lack field points.  How do I know which size to get so they screw in correctly?  The arrows are 2018.

Any help is appreciated.  Thanks!

Modern arrows are most all threaded the same.  I'd buy a batch of field points and replace them all so you know they're all the same weight.  I shoot 125g in my recurve.  Good luck.

So I don't have to worry about the diameter of the arrow or the thickness of the wall?

Screw in heads are universal.  If you're new to it, just shoot them... when you need to buy new arrows or are ready to take archery to a higher level you can worry about spine and diameter and so forth.

get the 9/32.  all of the threads are the same but 9/32 will be flush to your arrow.  if you see really bad arrow flight up the grains to 125 or more

Good info.  For my future reference, is there a general rule of thumb for which diameter field point will fit flush to a given arrow size?  Or do you know of a on-line chart with that information?

most carbons are 5/16.  large aluminum (22xx and over) are 11/32.
