Remington Model 7 Youth
« on: July 12, 2007, 09:57:43 AM »

Just wondering if any of you guys here has any 1st hand experience with these...I am trading on 1 tomorrow for my youngest boy who is 12 this year in 223...he fell in love with my other bolt guns and wants one real bad...so...I figured what the heck...and will be picking it up for him...I'll scope it with my 3 x 9 Leupold tactical scope in a set of low rings and will getting ready for his first youth deer hunt this season...

Thanks

Yes and no. Faye now uses my old originall 18.5" barreled 7-08 Model 7 with the stock cut to 12" since she is so short. That's basically the same as the youth gun except the stock is real walnut and 1/2" shorter than on a youth model I believe.

Other than the shortened stock made of hardwood rather than walnut they are the same gun as the rest of the model 7's are.

In my opinion you're badly over scoping it for him. The one Faye now uses has had a variety of scopes on it over the course of the 25-30 years we've had it. I think the first was a Leupold Vari-X II 1-4, then a Vari-X III 1.5-5 and at one time a Leupold Compact 3-9 then a Bushnell Elite 3200 2-7 and now it wears a Bushnell Elite 4200 1.5-6 that we put on it in preparation for a night time hog hunt in Texas several years ago at the Reed Ranch.

Smaller more compact scopes of that nature just go better on the little compact rifle than a huge scope and unless I'm mistaken about the one you're talking about it's a fairly large package. I think a 2-7 or 1.5-6 is just perfect for the Model 7 rifle.

In all those years we've owned that rifle with it being used first by me then our oldest son and now Faye I think one shot on game only has been fired with the magnification turned above about 4x and that was a buck I shot with it at 9X at about 200 yards across a valley.

I have a Model 7 in 308. Its a good gun, fairly accurate too. I set mine up with a Leupold VX I 3 x 9 x 40, I didn't like it so much so today I pulled it off and went back to basics just the iron sights. The gun is well balanced and short so getting threw brush is less of a problem than with say a 24" barrel. I believe he will be happy with it. My only complaint is the laminated stock. Mine has developed a small crack its an easy fix there are a million stocks available for the 7. All in all I dont think you can go wrong with it. Good luck.

Thanks..

Boss...it's this scope...http://www.excaliburenterprises.com/scopes/leupold/vx3-tactical.html#39 with the duplex reticle...It's not a real big heavy scope..and with the lager target knobs he can adjust a-lot easier than the regular kind...It's perfectly clear edge to edge and has good eye relief on it...I kinda figured it would be ok for him to have a decent one for his first...

Don't think I'd want a 12-yr old adjusting his own scope.

Initially no...he won't...I'll  set up and dial it in.....but...he will have to fine tune it for his sight picture...so he has to learn how to do it correctly.

Very good choice of gun & scope. This will be a great gun for him to learn marksmanship.
