Federal American Eagle vs Military
« on: July 13, 2007, 07:15:51 AM »
  I started prepping some cases for reloading and came across something I've not seen before. When de-priming them, I noticed they were tighter than normal. Then after prep and clean, I went to prime them only to find that the primer wouldn't go into the pocket. I had to use my chamfer tool and remove the crimp around the pocket before priming.
  Is this the same type of crimp used on military brass? I've never reloaded any military brass (yet) but have heard so much about the crimp.

Sounds like one of several types of crimps you may find.

Look at the headstamp on the brass. You will likely find that it is Lake City, which is military brass. I have had a number of American eagle boxes that contained Lake City brass, although these were always 55Gr FMJ. Federal owns Lake City.

  Fastbike;
  The head stamp says F C for Federal. But from what you are saying, this is the same crimping I would find on military brass. I have been weary of getting any military brass to reload because of hearing (reading) about having to remove this crimp. But if this is all there is to it, I won't worry too much about it. It only added a couple of more seconds each in case prep time. And I just used the same tool that I use for doing the case mouth.
  Thanks for the replies.
