Skunk Essence?? Should I add some or not??
« on: July 13, 2007, 10:04:21 AM »
This question is best answered by the guys that make lure. I have a gallon of the sweet heavy liquid used to flavor Gummie bear Candies. It's plenty power full smelling on it's own, very sweet. I intend to use it for coon and bear lure this fall.
My question is would there be any value to placing say two drops/ and I mean just drops of pure skunk quill in the stuff? I have both pure quill and (ticured? spelling?) skunk essence I could use.
I'm just wondering if skunk would help set the odor and give it even more staying power than it has now?

Mark, decided to add those smiley suckers to my reply---they ate up almost all my former reply, so here we go again.
Put your skunk juice off to the side, don't ruin such a good tasting treat. If it fails as a coon and bear attractant, you can always eat it.
I wonder what the odor of the gummi base will be in colder weather?Have eaten gummi's on the trap line, but would never waste them on a coon---let alone a dang bear.

Mac , i wouldnt add any skunk essance this year.  If you want you could take a very small amount of your  gummy juice and add SMALL amount skunk and let set  6 months to year.  I prefer a year.  Skunk mellows out and actually  "sweetens" up after awhile in a formula.  Of course the amount you use and the what you are adding the quill to makes a differance.   Skunk is a good fixative but there are other fixatives out there that i would  use vs  skunk  in your formulating a bear or coon lure.    Alot of people dont realize that  you  need to let some formulas  set and absorb each other and various ingrediants can enhance or overpower ingrediants  you are using if  you arent familiar with the properties of ingrediants you are using.  You wouldnt go wrong adding a bit of anise to your lure.  I wouldnt take and use all of the gallon in one formula UNLESS you can get more and then experiment .  Make sure you  write down everything and amounts you are using.  PLUS  know what  concentrations you are using originally so if you find a good hot lure you can reformulate it again.  Also   time you  let it sit and also temperature is a factor with some  ingrediants.    Good Luck.. if you get  bear   first day,   get that bugger skinned out and  bring some down to Wi Fall rondezvous and we cook some up quick.   I will supply mushrooms, onions and wild rice!  You supply the liquid refreshment of your own choice....Ahem   Leines Red~!

Good advice from RdFx but I would like to add that I've never seen a bear pass my Coyote Super Range All Call lure at a set and the lure has skunk musk in the formulation. This is the same lure my Dad used to trap nuisance bear when he was a Michigan State Trapper. Ace

Thanks guys
Tom
I have several pails of gummie's for the bears, that are not considered food grade. They were cleaned out of the machinery or off the floor. I don't really know if the liquid I have is first quality or rejected for some reason? I did have a large bag of  good gummies but "this hog" ate them all, LOL!

I wasn't really thinking of doping the whole gallon, just maybe playing with some of it. I'm not sure if I can hook up with more of the stuff or not. As stated above I really don't know why I was able to get the juice. My guess is it didn't pass quality control, otherwise I wouldn't think the company would let it out the door??? I do know it can stand alone as a lure because I've used it sparingly in the past.

Thanks for the heads up on the Coyote lure. It just so happens that I already have it and several other of your lures in my bag. When I still had fox on my line your fox lures were my number one producer. I can honestly say that Lennon's lures have been used on my line since the early 70's.

One lure no longer available that I wish someone could reproduce. O L Butchers #2 fox, it was the back up lure on my fox line. I've only found one other lure that seems close to the Butchers fox, and it is sold as otter lure. The stuff had a totally different color and odor then anything I've seen except for that one otter lure that seems similar.

As for bears, much like coon their big hairy pigs.
