Can speed become dangerous?
« on: May 31, 2003, 07:10:15 PM »
I know this is a game of speed but i belivee it is a game of accuracy,  too.  I see shooters that miss as many as 20-25 shots in a 10 stage event,  placing high in the standings.  I believe shooting that fast can be dangerous.  If a fellow is shooting that fast,  he may not stop himself from firing a live round after a squib load.  This could cause a gun blowup and injure the shooter or others on the posse.

I have also seen shooters run at top speed and trip.  This is also potentially dangerous when handling loaded firearms.

How many of you have thought about this potential danger?

Running with a loaded firearm in your hands is a serious NO-NO!!!  If someone is shooting at you, have at it, but not while having fun and playing games!!!
It's my belief that the problem with the safety issues happens when someone is trying to go much faster than their skill level.  We all want to increase our speed, but that comes with practice, not exceeding you skill.  There are some that do it, but I haven't seen a way to draw the line untill they become unsafe.
Since you brought the subject up, do you have any ideas?

A good friend of mine, "Billy Boots", who is a Territorial Governor for several clubs in northeast Texas, shoots with your club on occasion.  He shoots Duelist (as I do), and he is both FAST and SAFE, whereas I am only SAFE, but getting less slow.  Next time he comes to visit, try to posse up with him, and personally observe what I'm saying.

FAST and SAFE are not mutually exclusive attributes.  The safety issues you mention should be reconciled by the stage RO (or whomever is running the timer), since he/she is right there with the shooter,  and is supposed to take appropriate action in the event of shooter "brain fart".
The SASS rules for range safety are effective IF understood and enforced by all participants.  If you see a safety infraction and don't bring it to the attention of the individual and or RO, shame on you.

To me, it seems as if control of your firearm is the key. I have seen shooters move FAST, yet they were in total control at all times. I have also seen some move slowly, yet manage to sweep the crowd or drop their firearm. As to the squibs, that is a concern I share with you.  In our sport, too many try to load down to gain that extra half second. Personally, I have nothing against gamers, but I have seen a couple shooters with squibs not realize it and have the timer catch it. Seems to me this would be an argument for a minimum bullet velocity. 'Course, with 35 grains of Pyrodex, folks gemerally don't have a problem noticing if I have a squib! :-D

I posted this on the SASS wire and cannot find it.  I guess they deleted it.  It is a shame an organization can censor a legitimate question.
