Nylon 66 and scope mounting problems

I have a nylon 66 and have always had a problem keeping the scope mounted on the Weaver grooves.
The sheet metal grouves do not seem to be adequateky, deep and sharp.

I am thinking about grinding the groves so that thre scope mounts have better purchase.


Also i hjave lost the finger sight compression screw-- maybe it was stripped

Any suggestions would be appreciated

If that is the  remington nylon 66. even if you were able to keep the screws tightened which I don't think you will be able to.The design of the gun will never allow you to keep the gun zero the scope will continue to move.  This is from my experience and several friends  It an excellent shooter with open sites only   Keep trying but you may see. I am not good explaining whys whatevers etc  just my 2 cents worth but if you are interested in selling I may be interested .

The 66 stock has a lot of flexibility side-to-side.  Also, the holes for the cover screws allow movement, so mounting a scope is a study in frustation.  I found that, with a scope, I could make shots go off about 2 inches at 25 yards just by resting against the trunk of a tree.  The whole series, 10, 11, 12, 66, and 77 work best shot offhand and with open sights.  Besides, the rifle is so light that even a small scope seriously affects the balance.  That said, I wish I still had one, they were a hoot to carry and shoot.

I had these problems as late as last year and was greatly suprised because I had got by with on/off scope mounting on my Nylon 66 for a lot of years with good accuracy.
I tryed tightening the reciever cover bolts some and found that it made the action of the bolt quite sluggish I could not correct this (new) problem till I pulled the reciever cover off and cleaned a bunch of crud out of the top and side area's. Had to have been undue pressure somewhere because the thing worked like brand new with both bolts tight upon re-assembly.

I have not tryed to put a scope back on it since the reciever cleaning but will do so soon to see if it corrected the problem. This 1971 vintage rifle always shot great with the iron sights as said, but also made for the ultimate Squirrel sniping machine with the 1" tip-off mounts and the clarity of a 4x32 scope scanning the full foilaged hickory & walnut trees on those early Aug hunts.

I have two 66's - the Apache Black (70's production) and the Mohawk Brown (80's production).  The older one is the more reliable and more accurate, though the new one is in pristine condition.
I have shot both scoped, and they will shoot well during the shooting session, but next time out may be off - scope getting bumped in transit maybe?
They are fun little rifles, not the best shooters but quite alright.
