Bold Coyotes in BC.
« on: May 31, 2003, 07:10:56 PM »
This is the second time in under a year that coyotes have tried to kill my dogs. Yesterday my wife and I were running out behind the house when we heard a yodel real close.
Our husky loves to fight  so she took off after it with our little dog in tow. The damn yote lured them into the middle of the pack of about 6 Coyotes.
The Husky waded in and kicked ass but the coyotes kept coming until she was spent, we had to rush in.

The little one showed some crazy fighting skill and emerged with only a few punctures and some wet fur.
This happened in a coulee about 60 yards in front of us! Even running at them and yelling only pushed them back a few yards.  They even followed us for about one and a half clicks before they backed off.

Next time I'm packing the rifle!

You got some BOLD coyotes... normally they should have run for cover at the first sight of you & your wife.

Sounds like they need to be taught some "manners"... any center-fire rifle will do that.

Normally, I don't much care for "assault-rifle-look-alikes", but a semi-automatic Colt AR-15 with a 30 round magazine loaded with varmint bullets would do a "number" on all 6 of those coyotes in about 10 seconds flat!

The .223 (5.56mm NATO) round will "reach out and touch someone" (including coyotes) pretty well out to about 250 yards with a good scope.

Good Shooting...

Could it be that food is a little scarce for them right now where you live. If it had only been one yote I might think that it was either sick or hurt in some way. I'm no expert on them but we had one here that was also "bold". (Notice I said had) It did not look as well feed as the others that I have seen. This one attacked my aunt's little dog one morning but she ran to the door and yelled at it and it turned loose enough for the dog to get away. I heard all of this and even saw it trot through my front yard about 20 min. later. I live about 250 yds. from my aunt. The next evening just at dark I heard my dog bark and I picked up the 270 Win. before going out. As I stepped off the back porch the coyote just trotted away from the house like I was nothing and stopped at about 40yds and turned and looked at me. The next thing we both saw was muzzle flash. Me through the scope and him from the receiving end. All others I have seen have ran for the hills when they saw me. I have to agree with Ron, it's time for a lesson.

i agree.   they can become dangerous to more than just dogs when they lose their fear.   and nothing commands respect like hot lead.   time to lay the smack down!

Sorry I took so long to reply but I work out of town.

There are few places on earth with as much yote food as here in the Kootenays... so these dogs are well fed and pretty big!  I think the problem is that few people here bother to hunt them... too busy hunting bigger stuff.

Almost everyone here has a story about losing dogs to these things!

You all have the right solution..... I'll have to start slinging lead but, the season isn't open until september :(
