Question for Quick
« on: July 15, 2007, 05:48:52 AM »
Tim, Can you point me to some info on cast bullets in the 30-30 Handi? Do you have any opinions on the best bullet to use? I just ordered the Lee 170 gr flat point. I have a bunch of wheel weights I want to use up!

I'll bite but I'm going to need some more info.
Is this for hunting or for target practice?
Is your 170gr bullet PB or GC?
Are you looking for load data?

I've used Oregon Trails 165 PB loaded with 9.5gr of Unique in both my Marlin and Handi to take dozens of small game. Shoots straight past 50yds and punches a nice .309 dia hole.

Lee's 180gr GC with a good dose of Varget will punch trough my Test box.
I'm currentl working on two different kinds of cast one at 220gr the other at 200.

Thanks for the replies, been off here for a while, just back on last night.

wcf3030,
I will use the load for hunting. Although once I find a favorite load it will probably be the only one I use.

The 170 is a gc with a flat point. I also ordered a 200 gr gc round nose.

I am interested in load data. I had hoped to use 3031, but understand it might be too fast. I have some data on 170 gr loads but none on 200. I also expect my bullets to drop somewhat heavier than advertised.

This is what I have, or have ordered so far.
c press with .309 sizer ( I know I should have slugged the bore before ordering, but honestly did not think about it)
universal case expander
cast iron dutch oven, ladle, slotted spoon, and ingot molds.
Also the 2 Lee aluminum molds, and Richard Lee's book.

What else would you recommend?

Thanks!

Check your messages.

I like Varget better the IMR 3031 for cast.
